I know it is important keeping sugar low, especially with autoimmune illness, but we still need some sweetness in our lives and honey is the perfect way to add some, and it might do some good too!

Honey has anti-inflammatory properties, and since inflammation is at the core of autoimmune disease, every bit helps.

Honey is also anti-bacterial and can help heal wounds. This might contribute to healing the gut when taken internally. I can certainly attest to the fact that my gut feels instantly soothed after a teaspoon of some honey!

Honey is an antioxidant, which means it can reduce oxidative damage. People with autoimmune disease(s) are more prone to oxidative damage and conditions associated, such as stroke, heart attacks and some cancers. This makes honey even sweeter.
What kind of honey should you choose?

Raw and unpasteurized

Want even more honey power?
You can choose honey like Manuka that has much research and science behind it showing its healing powers, along with honey products like propolis and royal jelly, which have many active compounds including phenols, flavonoids and exhibit profound anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial/anti-fungal effects.

This was my way of saying goodbye to summer and preparing to welcome fallšŸ. I still hope to spend the fall outside, soaking in the healing power of nature.

I make it a point to spend as much time as I can outside. Connecting with nature is one of the best ways to de-stress, re-charge energy and improve mood. Even 20 minutes a week (yes a week!) can make a difference. Tell me how you are spending the last days of summer, feel free to share pics!!

Don’t focus on fighting the disease, focus on creating health.

What are the factors that create health? How can you apply this to your life?

Think of your body as a garden. If you plant flowers and they don’t grow what do you do? You look at the soil, the surrounding environment, does it have enough nutrients? does it get enough sun and water? What is going on, how can you help it? This is the same principle you need to apply to yourself. Create an environment that feeds health and your body will ā€œgrowā€ health. We require much the same things everything in nature does. Nutrients, sun, water, sleep and activity. We require exercise and mental stimulus as well as feeling emotionally stable. Even plants react to such stimuli, which has been studied for decades. Finding out what kind of flower you are and what are your exact needs to create a healthy environment is well worth your time.

You may think you are not doing this, but consider it for a moment. Do you change your mind often before you choose your food? Not because you don’t know what to eat, but because you think you need to eat something other than what your body is asking for? If your body is asking for protein and instead you give it fruit, how do you think this will reflect on your body long term?
If you are pleasing your family and friends with your food choices and not what your body requires for proper nourishment, how is that reflected on how you feel in your body? Are you following a trend? A diet your friend recommended? Why? Have you inquired with your body if it likes that? How is it making you feel physically and emotionally? Chances are that you are not listening to your bodily cues on what to eat, but are falling prey to all the overwhelming diet advice out there, or as I like to call it—noise. Instead, lean into YOU and learn what YOUR body truly needs to thrive, and I can promise you it will differ from what all this noise is telling you and you will feel so much better.
Do you know what those cues are or what they feel like? What would you add to the list of things that affect your food choices?

HOW TO REGULATE IMMUNE SYSTEM

1. Eat a whole foods diet. Diet should be very nutrient-dense. You want to eat foods rich in zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A and make sure your levels of vitamin D are optimal.

2. Move! Exercise improves the activity of our natural killer cells, metabolism, digestion, sleep and mental health. It is best to get daily exercise, but don’t overdo it.

3. Feed and nourish your microbiome. Taking a probiotic is not enough. Feed those beneficial bacteria if you want them to stay and thrive in your gut, eat a wide variety of vegetables and fruits to support your microbiome. If you have digestive issues-we should talk!

4. Sleep. This is critical to your immune health, but also for your mental and physical performance. Make sure you are getting between 8 and 9 hours of sleep

5. Rest and restore. This is not the same as sleep. This is referring to leisure time, going out to enjoy nature, meditation, hanging out with friends and family.

What would you add to this list? What other things do you do to help you feel your best?

Feeling burned out by your efforts to fit in all the self-love, self-care activities in your day? Yeah, I know the feeling, but there is a way to be gentle and create a habit for life without much effort, just a few minutes out of your day can turn into a lifetime of change.

Finding what feels like true self-care can be a challenge. I’ve been there, trying so hard to care for myself that I was creating way more stress than care, and it left me feeling more like a failure than like a queen. So what should you do?

When people close to me look at my life, they always say things like ā€œI couldn’t do what you doā€, or ā€œI’m not disciplined enoughā€, ā€œit is too hardā€ and my favourite ā€œI can’t give up _____ (insert favourite food here" lol!

I did not get where I am overnight, and I love cheese and gluten too, it’s just that over time I realized I like not being in pain much more, and I have stopped missing those foods a long time ago. It is a process and requires some faith and trust in that process.
How I got to where I am, took time, but more than the time, it took deciding every single day that I will get to this place. The choices I made were all a reflection of that decision. I did not make all the decisions on the same day, but one at a time and I allowed myself as much time as I needed, but did not look for loopholes, I committed to it. I allowed mistakes and learning curves, and all that the process required, including a very intense emotional ride. It was a tough choice; I admit. But what was my alternative? A life of overmedicating and pain? No, I was not ready to accept that as a choice at all. So, believe me when I say, If I did it, you too certainly can do it, but smarter! You don’t have to discover it all on your own as I did; you don’t have to search far and wide, you just have to decide and ask for help. However hard it may seem, there is a prize at the end. The beautiful personal growth and the person you become, the one who is waiting for you on the other side of this process.

I feel this is an important article to share. It really highlights the importance of knowing what supplements you need and making sure that it is safe for you to take them. This is true of any herbals, vitamins, or minerals, anything that is considered a supplement needs careful consideration. It also makes a wonderful point; diet is the primary source of your nourishment, no supplement can replace it.

We, as a society, are used to just taking a pill to make ourselves ā€œbetterā€, but there is no quick fix for autoimmune issues, or any issues for that matter.

I realize the lure of fast results and minimum effort, but we know this doesn’t actually work. It’s time to end band-aid solutions.

If you put in the effort, time and dedication for yourself, the results will follow! Yes, it can be slow, it can be hard, it won’t be linear and you won’t see results right away, but if you keep going you will see great strides, and your results will be permanent. It is somewhat like planting a garden from seeds—for months, you will see nothing grow, but if you keep watering it, giving it sunlight, caring for it, all of a sudden it starts to sprout and eventually blooms. Plant your seeds today.

Coffee is one of those food items that has a lot of controversy around it. Some sources say it’s very beneficial, some say it should be avoided at all cost. In the past, coffee was painted with quite a dark brush, but new research has come out since and it seems coffee’s reputation has been redeemed. When not abused coffee does have benefits.

• It is an antioxidant
• It may offer protection from certain diseases (Type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease and others)
• It improves cognitive and physical ability

And we all love it! However, knowing your body is key. It can cause unwanted side effects, such as heartburn, nervousness and insomnia, especially if you are having a few cups a day. Some people are just very sensitive to caffeine and report feeling unwell even from very small amounts. On the other hand, coffee can be so beneficial, it can even improve autoimmune symptoms (I’m one of those lucky people). For me, it’s all about the amount and quality. I drink the highest quality coffee I can find (this is one of the things I splurge on at the grocery) and only one cup a day to get the best effects. What is your experience?
