Before YTT, I knew OF meditation, I understood the premise of meditation, and I knew it was a healthy mental practice, yet I rarely did it. 🥲
I told myself meditation takes time in an already busy day. I was transfixed on obtaining tangible outcomes instead of the mental, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual growth that stillness inspires.
Meditation doesn't need to be an obligation. And, it doesn't need to involve sitting cross legged, with calm music, and deep breathing (although this is an awesome method if you choose it). It can begin by a 5 minute withdrawal of the senses (pratyahara), closed eyes, deep breathing, anywhere and anytime. Simply let thoughts drift away. 💨
So if you are anything like me and want to habituate meditation, find what deters you. For me, a nagging to-do list thwarts me from practicing meditation, yet the mental clarity meditation brings is what makes the to-do list no longer 'nag'. Peter McWilliams beautifully describes this counterintuitive result.
