What if your stress response has roots deeper than your own experiences? đ
When we talk about generational trauma, weâre not just talking about stories passed down through families. Weâre talking about how chronic stress can affect the nervous system over time.
Research in trauma science and stress physiology shows that prolonged exposure to discrimination, systemic inequality, and chronic stress can impact how the body regulates cortisol, sleep, emotional responses, and hypervigilance. đŻ
Some researchers have also explored how severe or long-term stress may influence gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms. While this field is still evolving, what we know with certainty is that chronic stress changes how the nervous system functions.
That means feeling constantly on guard, emotionally exhausted, or unable to fully rest may not be a personal flaw. It may be a stress response shaped by lived experience.
Healing does not mean erasing history. đ
It means helping the nervous system experience safety again through trauma-informed care, culturally responsive therapy, and supportive environments.
Black History Month honors resilience. đȘ
It also creates space to acknowledge impact, and support healing.
