Labels! We love them, we hate them, we avoid ‘em, we seek them! Labels can mean so many different things to so many different people, and, to be honest, there no right or wrong way to think about them. Our brains use labels as a means of classification; they love to put things into little boxes, and having a label helps them do that. But that doesn’t mean labels are always good or helpful.

How many times have you seen someone being labelled as “the smart one” and feeling crushed by the pressures? There are so many ways that labels can harm us (intentionally or unintentionally).

BUT labels can also be incredibly helpful. Take the current uptick of ADHD diagnoses for example, a TON of folks are getting access to so much more support than they ever thought possible because they’ve finally found a label for what they’ve been experiencing.

AND to make it even MORE confusing, sometimes labels can be helpful and harmful at the same time. Like when someone who’s bi feels like they’re “not bi enough” if they’re in a long term cis-het relationship. The label of bi might feel the most affirming of their sexuality, but the different stigmas and/or gatekeeping around the what bi-ness is might feel confusing and suffocating if their life doesn’t align perfectly with the definitions they see.

So, why am I all 🗣️“let’s talk labels” if I’m just going to say “labels are confusing and can be a lot of different things”??? BECAUSE my dear friends, I want you to know you’re not alone if you struggle with labels AND you’re also not alone if you love them. You’re especially not alone if you feel good about some and weird about others. Use labels however they work best for you (as long as you’re not harming others!!!). Accept some, brush off others, take some with a grain of salt. YOU are the only one who gets to decide what labels you apply to yourself and any chitter chatter from the peanut gallery simply doesn’t matter.

And if you need help navigating the topic of labels and/or how you want to apply them to yourself, book a FREE 15-Minute Consultation via the link in my bio to see if I might be a good therapist for you!

I’m constantly talking with clients about how impossible it can feel to actually REST because it’s so addicting to just veg out.

And, listen, I love a good veg. Sometimes the best thing ever is looking at my little phone screen while some trash tv plays on my big screen. But generally if I veg for too long I feel like actual garbage. I’ve watched whole seasons of reality tv in a day as my “lazy day” activity and then cried because I felt worse instead of better.

That’s because veg-ing isn’t actually great rest. ESPECIALLY if we’re doing it for too long too often. The dual screens and the short form content get our brains addicted, stuck in a loop and fiending for more, and then all of a sudden 3 hours have gone by and we’re pi**ed at ourselves.

SO, here’s some (realistic) ideas of ways to take a little step away from the veg cycle. And remember, I’m not saying veg-ing is bad and you shouldn’t do it. I’m just saying everything in moderation.

Try it out and let me know how it goes! And if you want more support breaking out of the veg cycle use the link in my bio to book a FREE 15 Minute Consultation call to see if I’m the right therapist to help you out!

You guys, no matter what Rhianna says, we actually CANNOT go 0 to 60 in 3.5!

It’s so easy for us to fall into the trap that we can only do new things or make changes or choices if WE’RE PERFECT or the CONDITIONS ARE PERFECT.

💥News Flash💥 THAT ISN’T TRUE!!!!!

You ACTUALLY have to start where you’re at right now.

Maybe you can’t sit down and bang out a whole book, what if you just start with one sentence?

Going to the gym for the first time ever? Don’t reach for the 50lb dumbbells babe, start with your body weight or 2 or 5!

Missed a day of that new habit you’re trying to form? Oh well, you can always pick it back up tomorrow! (You DO NOT have to “try again next week”)

What I’m saying, y’all, is that you do not have to be an expert to try something new. Especially when it comes to your mental health! Adapt, adjust and apply in a way that fits where you’re at now and as you sstart to see some growth you can readjust.

And, if you need help adjusting your goals or figuring out how to start where you’re at, book a FREE 15 minute CONSULT CALL using the link in my bio to see if I’m the right person to help you out!

Life is never all good or all bad; sometimes the cherry blossoms are right next to the outhouses, y’know? 🌸💩

Okay, I know that’s not a real saying, but it is a true one. Beauty can exist at the same time as s**t.

There are terrible horrible things happening in the world, but there are also really really good ones.

Unfortunately, it’s not all as black & white as things either being all beautiful or all s**tty. It’s messy and it’s chaotic and it can feel really weird recognizing the good and the bad all at once. But, that’s life.

As we get older, we better understand the nuances of life, and the ups and downs it comes with, but we often continue spend too much time striving for perfection, trying to be HAPPY ALL THE TIME or making every day rainbows. But that’s not realistic. We’ve got to accept that there will always be a bit of both beauty and s**t (and some neutral stuff in between) and do what we can with what we’ve got.

To be clear, I’m not telling you that you always have to step in the s**t or wallow in it like a pig. You’re allowed to side-step it, or spray some poo-pouri, or get out a p**p bag to clean it up, but you can’t do any of those things if you’re pretending it’s not there, right?

Ps. It applies the other way too, even if you’re stuck wallowing in the s**t you can usually look around and find some beauty. A lot of plants grow best with manure. 💁🏼‍♀️

FOR THE RECORD: I am NOT making these faces all the time. My face is usually very ~neutral and subtle~ in session, but if you’re putting the tea in therapy??? You better know my loud face is coming OUT!

Ps. Welcome to the first iteration of “Funny Friday” I think that laughter can be so healing and helpful in navigating the tough parts of our lives so every* Friday (*at least most of them) I’m going to share some funny therapy or therapy adjacent memes I’ve come across lately so we can all laugh together. 📢 SELF-CARE DOESN’T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE!!!! 📢

Listen, I know that advertising and media has made it seem like “self care” is all face masks, bubble baths, fancy manicures and spa days. And sure, those can be ways of caring for yourself (your girl loves a mani 💅🏻) BUT THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY WAYS!!!!!! They just want you to think that’s the only way because it makes THEM money.

So much of self-care has been commodified, but I’m here to remind you that so much more of self-care can be completely free or very cheap!!!

Really, a lot of the harder stuff that falls into the self-care category has to be free because it’s you doing stuff for yourself like;

🌸 Setting boundaries (with people, on your time, on how you interact with yourself)
🪻 Creating routines for yourself
🌸 Maintaining your space
🪻SPEAKING KINDLY TO YOURSELF.

Those things cost NOTHING and there’s SO MUCH TO GAIN!!!

Plus, there’s so much fun self-care that’s free too! Put your face in the sun! Go for a “noticing” walk! Get a book from the library! Chat s**t with your friends at a park!

I’ve included a list of free or inexpensive self-care activities as the last slide which you can use and save as needed, but maybe it would help to make your own personalized one too! Then anytime you need a lil love you it can remind you of your options.

If you need a little extra help figuring out how to implement self-care in your life use the link in my bio to book a free 15-minute consultation to see if I could be the one to help you figure it out!

I get it, I really do. Why do you think I haven’t posted here in a while?

Sometimes even the smallest tasks can feel insurmountable and we can get stuck and want to avoid it forever. The dishes pile up, the laundry’s all dirty, everything seems to have a layer of dust on it and then we’re immediately overwhelmed and have no idea where to even start.

But, here’s the secret, sometimes the starting is the hardest part. I had to take physics in school and though a lot of it is long gone from my brain, one thing I think of often with clients is Newton’s first law; “an object at rest remains in rest, and an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.” That’s right, there’s a literal scientific reason for us to have a hard time getting started. BUT it also means that once we get started, it often feels much easier to keep going than we ever thought it would.

So use some of these tips as a way to be gentle on yourself with your starting. Give yourself an easy out AND take the out if you need it! 5 minutes of cleaning up is better than 0 minutes of cleaning up. Writing of your essay as much as you can in the length of your favourite song is better than staring at a blank screen for hours. Figuring out which driving schools are in your town (even if you don’t have the energy to actually set up lessons yet) is better than stewing in your stress and overwhelm. And posting one thing is better than letting another couple weeks go past before you pick back up your business social account 😉🙃

Let me know if this is helpful, and if you ever need more support feel free to reach out by DM or book an appointment using the links in my bio! I have immediate availability for new clients and offer a discount for post secondary students!
