“We’ve come a long way baby” is a phrase borrowed from the feminist movement in the ‘60’s. Grand social movements of the time opened doors to creativity and expressions of freedom and liberation like never before. Women refused to return to a primarily domestic role in society having enjoyed the positive feelings of workplace success during the Second World War when women were invited to help out. The music revolution produced greats from Great Britain and the USA like the Beatles, Stones, Elvis and more. Here in Canada we also had some amazing musicians, comedians, and rock stars rise up as well. The sexual revolution triggered by the invention of the birth control pill also opened up opportunities mostly for women to explore sexuality without the real fear and harmful consequences of unwanted pregnancies that scarred generations of women and families beforehand. Looking back, the 60’s was a time of great liberation and personal freedoms.
In more recent times, it seems to me that people have struggled with their own personal sense of freedom and liberation. Mostly, in my view due to the increasingly politicization of liberation, which in my view has paradoxically restricted personal freedoms on the ground.
In a Canadian context, especially under the former Justin Trudeau and Freeland regime pressures to conform to their definition of liberty especially for women actually further restricted and limited the participation of all women in civil society. Do you recall their proposal for individuals to sign a contract stating support for the right to abortion before being hired in a job or to run for office with the Liberal government?
It is sad that societies continue to underestimate the intelligence of everyday women to know how to take care of themselves and their sexual health.
It is possible to hold personal beliefs that differ from public opinion AND to serve well. It is the multicultural Canadian way…Mental health is the new social movement of our time on a global scale. MH has also come a long way and there is no need to suffer invisibly or alone.
