๐ผ Offering your baby expressed/pumped milk? It may surprise you to learn that you don't need to warm it before serving! Humanmilk can be served cold, at room temperature or warmed. In fact, some babies may have a preference for a particular temperature. It's okay to experiment to see what may work best for you and your little one. Keep in mind that:
๐ก๏ธFreshly expressed milk can be safely stored at room temperature (25ยฐC) for 6 hours. **Please note: public health guidelines state freshly expressed milk left at room temperature for more than 6 hours should be discarded**
โ๏ธIdeally, freshly expressed milk should be refrigerated within an hour if you're not planning to use it to feed your baby in the next 6 hours.
๐งYou can safely thaw milk slowly in the refrigerator overnight, or more quickly by running the storage container under cool running water (you may switch to lukewarm water once it's partially thawed), Use the thawed milk immediately or store it in the refrigerator for no longer than 24 hours once itโs thawed.
๐ซDo not thaw or heat expressed milk in the microwave or on the stove. Do not leave frozen milk out to thaw at room temperature.
โจ๏ธHeat milk by placing the container in a bowl of very warm water for no longer than 15 minutes or by running it under warm (but not hot) water. Previously frozen milk that has been thawed and brought to room temperature or warmed must be used within 1-2 hours.
๐ถLeftover milk must be used within 1-2 hours after the is finished feeding from the cup, bottle, etc... Do not return the milk to the fridge. After 2 hours, leftover should be discarded.
๐Please note: These guidelines are for healthy full-term babies and may vary for premature or sick babies. Consult your healthcare provider if you have questions about your unique situation. is not part of everyoneโs journey. Many parents do not pump at all while nursing, while others may pump temporarily or exclusively out of necessity or by choice. Each family is different, so do what works best for you and your baby.
