Happy Canada Day! Today we celebrate the people and communities that make our country vibrant, diverse, and resilient.

Canada Day is also a time to reflect on our shared responsibilities and the work still ahead to build a country where everyone can access the mental health and addictions care they need, when they need it.

At AMHO, we remain committed to advancing a system rooted in equity, inclusion, compassion, and community, because a strong Canada means supporting the wellbeing of all who call it home.

Today is National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Day.

In Canada, two-thirds of adults have experienced at least one potentially traumatic event in their lifetime. Yet many struggle in silence due to stigma and barriers to care.

It is essential to recognize how trauma can shape a person’s mental health and substance use. Together, we must continue to promote timely, trauma-informed care that supports well-being with dignity and compassion.

In Ontario, one in five men have reported their mental health to be fair or poor.

Asking for help isn't easy, receiving help should be.

During Men's Health Month, AMHO reaffirms our commitment to breaking down barriers so that everyone in Ontario, including men, feels safe, supported, and able to access the care they need.

AMHO would also like to thank our incredible members who offer dedicated mental health and addictions programs for men and who continuously care for those, where and when they need it.

June is a time to honour and respect the cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

As part of our commitment to learning and accountability, our staff are engaging with Indigenous-created resources that speak to land rights, food sovereignty, and the impact of colonialism today. We know that reflection alone is not enough, we must unlearn the colonial narrative in order to build relationships and work with Indigenous partners to rebuild health systems and services grounded in respect, truth, and justice.

While there is still a critical need for greater investment in Indigenous-led mental health and addictions services, we celebrate those reclaiming wellness through culture and community.

Minookmii, a program that offers free therapy to Indigenous adults through our member organization Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care – represent important steps forward, showing what becomes possible when Indigenous leadership guides care within existing systems.

Did you know as many as one third of people on supportive housing wait lists in Ontario are over the age of 65?

Older adults often face complex health, social, and environmental challenges that can impact their ability to get the care they need.

Every senior deserves care built with their wellbeing in mind, because when we plan for aging well, we build stronger, more inclusive communities for everyone.

During National Indigenous History Month, we honour the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

Delivering meaningful Mental Health and Addictions care to Indigenous communities requires services that are culturally appropriate, honour traditional practices, and are developed in partnership with Indigenous leadership. Respectful engagement begins with understanding- how to approach relationships in ways that reflect the values, histories, and governance of each community.

To support our members in this journey, AMHO has developed two learning resources: the First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and Urban Indigenous (FNIMUI) Health Equity Plan and Inclusive Recruitment Strategies. These tools are not prescriptive; they are intended to guide learning, reflection, and respectful action. We recognize we are not the experts, and we learn together with humility.

True reconciliation means building sustained, reciprocal relationships and embedding cultural safety into every level of care.

At AMHO, we recognize that Pride is more than a celebration. It’s a call to action.

Too often, 2SLGBTQIA+ people face mental health and addictions challenges shaped by exclusion, discrimination, and a lack of affirming care.

AMHO is committed to advancing equity by supporting our member organizations through policy and education grounded in the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Our Persons with Lived and Living Experience (PWLLE) advisory panel reflects the diverse communities we serve, helping ensure policy is shaped by those with direct experience- including voices from the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. This ensures that the voices and expertise of patients, families, and caregivers are not only present, but central to supporting mental health and addictions policy.

Together, we must commit to building an inclusive system where care is not conditional. One where everyone can access support that feels safe, respectful, and rooted in dignity, without any barriers.
