πŸ’₯What is Hemiballismus?

A rare complication of brain injuries such as stroke
Hemiballismus is characterized by involuntary, jerky movements on one side of the body, which can be quite distressing for those affected. It's caused by damage to a specific part of the brain called the Subthalamic Nucleus, often due to strokes.

⚑️So, what can be done about it? Here are a few treatment options:

1. Medications: Certain medications like dopamine antagonists (e.g., haloperidol) can help control these involuntary movements.

2. Botulinum Toxin (Botox) injection: This helps by weakening the overactive muscles. The injection should be done by an expert and under EMG or sonography guide. You can see the effect of Botulinum Toxin injection in one of my patients.

3. Physical or Occupational Therapy: Engaging exercise activities, although not very effective, can assist with mobility and help the patient regain control over their movements.

4. Surgery: In severe, intractable cases, brain surgery or deep brain stimulation of the brain might be helpful.

Telerehabilitation is a modern healthcare solution that uses technology to deliver rehabilitation services remotely. This approach allows patients to receive quality therapy from the ease of their homes, without the need to personally refer to the clinics.
Telerehabilitation is transforming the way we -as rehabilitation physicians- approach recovery, especially for those affected by stroke and brain injuries.

In multiple scientific studies, it is proven that telerehabilitation is as effective or even superior to face to face rehabilitation.
I will tell more of this treatment strategy, its types, and technologies used in near future.

I hope this is helpful for some of you, my friends.

Neuroplasticity is the brain's incredible ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. This means that even years after a stroke, there is potential for recovery and improvement in function. Engaging in rehabilitation therapies, cognitive exercises, and some specific treatments such as non-invasive brain stimulation, can enhance this process, allowing individuals to regain lost abilities and adapt to new ways of functioning. Every small step count towards recovery!

Many stroke survivors use the word "spasm" instead of "spasticity". In patients with stroke, we usually have spasticity, not spasm. Let's take a look at the differences: A spasm is a sudden, involuntary contraction of a muscle or group of muscles which is usually very painful. Like what you might have experienced when you have lumbar pain, or after severe exercise. Spasticity, on the other hand, is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase in muscle tone or stiffness. It is usually caused by a damage to the brain or spinal cord such as in stroke or MS. Spasms usually will relieve in a few minutes to a few days, but Spasticity usually lasts for weeks, months, or even years. We prescribe pain killers or muscle relaxants to relieve the spasm, but spasticity needs long term stretching, Botox (botulinum toxin) injections, or sometimes muscle relaxants for a long time. I hope you find this helpful.

What are Grab Bars and how they can help individuals with disability?
Bath and shower grab bars are safety devices securely mounted to walls in bathrooms to provide support and stability for individuals while bathing or showering. They are particularly beneficial for patients with limited mobility, seniors, or those recovering from surgery or injury, as they help prevent slips and falls by offering a secure handhold. Grab bars enhance bathroom safety and promote confidence in performing daily self-care activities independently.

How to get depressed in 5 steps? This is the first video from TeleWeCure's How-To series that explains how decreased activity of a tiny area on brain cortex is related to the development of major depression. It's funny and informative.

Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) is a technology that allows telemedicine and specifically service providers to monitor patients outside of traditional healthcare settings. It involves using various devices such as wearable sensors, mobile apps, and IoT devices to collect and transmit patient data in real-time.
in , we use RPM for managing chronic conditions, enabling early detection of issues, and reducing the need for frequent in-person visits to healthcare facilities.
