The amount and quality of your sleep can do a lot to interfere with your metabolism.

Not getting proper sleep quality and/or quantity impacts how you create and burn through your calories the next day, meaning, with poor sleep your body may be looking at storing your calories rather than burning them through different processes, one of which is the slowing down of your metabolism.

Furthermore, a poor night’s sleep will cause you blood sugar levels to be more elevated at baseline the next day, wreaking even more havoc on your metabolism and interfering with achieving and maintaining your ideal weight.

Prioritizing good quality sleep is an important factor in your strategy for good metabolic health and good health in general.

Seaweed might be your next favorite thing! Why? For its iodine concentration of course, not to mention it tastes great too! The production of thyroid hormones, which are necessary for metabolic function, is dependent on iodine.

But there is more to seaweed than you probably think...

Seaweed is very nutrient dense and is an excellent source of micronutrients including folate, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and selenium.

And did you know that cooking beans with the seaweed Kombu helps to reduce gas and bloating in those that have a bit more difficulty digesting beans?

Seaweed also contains antioxidants and as well as the kind of fibre that feeds the good bacteria in our gut.

So go ahead and add some seaweed to your next soup, salad, stir fry, etc. and reap the many benefits it has to offer.

In my 20s and early 30s, I never expected my late 40s to look and feel like this. Now that I am 48 years old, not only do I feel great, and excited about my future, but I am so proud of all the intention, discipline and hard work I put in to get me where I am today with my health, my career, my relationship, my community…

Hard work pays off, but not without direction and discipline.

When you put those 3 factors together, living your best life is fully achievable.

But take it from me, if your health is suffering, the work is harder, and the price you pay is much bigger, the end result less satisfying, and in the end, you will have to double down on your efforts to upgrade your health.

The sooner you begin to upgrade your health, the better (and the easier it is)!

Sometimes, your chance of getting osteoarthritis is influenced by your metabolic health.

Inflammation is a health maker that is tightly linked to metabolic dysfunction. Metabolic dysfunction often leads to inflammation which sometimes affects the joints specifically.

Type 2 diabetes specifically has been well documented in the research literature to lead to increased bone fragility through various mechanisms.

The good news is that your food and lifestyle decisions will help you maintain the health of your joints.

Prediabetes is more than simply a precursor to future complications. This is a sign of metabolic dysfunction in your body right now.

Setting goals for stable blood sugar and effective energy metabolism is the most effective technique to reverse prediabetes as well as optimizing your energy, brain function, balancing your moods, reducing / eliminating chronic pain, and just feeling great overall.

Choosing complete, healthy meals, controlling stress, optimizing your sleep, exercising your body often, consuming adequate micronutrients, and maintaining the health of your microbiota are just a few of the behaviours needed to achieve this.

With many more tools left unmentioned in that toolbox, there is no shortage of actions you can take today to stack the odds in your favour for developing and maintaining a healthy, top performing mind and body.

It’s all a matter of choice, and that choice is in your hands!

Metabolic dysfunction and burnout are related. Burnout arises after a prolonged period of high levels of stress and performance demands without adequate rest. The cortisol that is continuously released during these times, keeping you on high alert and allowing you to perform at a demanding level is also telling your body to keep glucose in your blood, blocking insulin from working. This is a contributing factor to insulin dysregulation / resistance.

When we are going through burnout, we feel drained and lacklustre, our brain is foggy and our vitality feels like a long lost friend.

Recovering from burnout requires resetting our body with an intentional routine of rest, a strategic diet, appropriate exercise and a good supplement stack all aimed at rebalancing your stress mechanisms and restoring your body’s metabolic function.

Avoiding burnout with the right diet and lifestyle practices is key to top performance - no matter what kind of performance we are talking about.

You have a lot more control than you realize, having the right health practitioner in your corner will help you leverage your physiology in order meet the higher levels of demands we sometimes face.

Did you know that blood sugar levels, metabolic syndrome and stroke risk are all clearly linked? Indeed they are! Oxidative stress from uncontrolled blood sugar can both damage and harden artery walls raising your blood pressure and increasing your risk of stroke.

But there are proven ways to reduce your condition and your risk. Maintaining a proper diet, getting regular exercise, and working towards a pattern of balanced blood sugar levels within a healthy range are important things to work towards and well within most peoples capabilities.

It comes down to priorities…will you prioritize your health before or after the dramatic health scare?

There are so many ways to improve your metabolic health like consuming less processed meals, moving more and practicing mindfulness. This can look like regularly eating non-starchy vegetables, focusing on building more muscle through your workouts and taking 5 minutes before bed to think about the things/people for which you are grateful. Avoiding starchy grains, practicing time-restricted eating and prioritizing good quality sleep are also important levers to pull when looking to increase our metabolic health.

If you need to, start small, start today, focus on one thing and do it consistently, until it becomes a habit, then move to the next.

If you want big changes, you want to follow a proven methodology based in the latest science, with a professional that is well-versed in the natural health arena or better yet, join one of my health programs, I will help you get results.

Our Story

I am an integrative health practitioner/researcher/clinician whose mission is to show men and women, 40+ years of age, what great health can look like after 40 and take them through a specific methodology (roadmap) that will help them achieve this for themselves.

I practice Osteopathy, Holistic Nutrition (includes food & supplementation, lifestyle, environment, spirituality), Yoga and Pilates, and draw upon the knowledge derived from all of these areas of expertise to create a unique and comprehensive approach (biochemical, biomechanical, environmental, spiritual) to helping people reach their health & wellness goals.

I specialize in digestive function, neurological (brain) health, concussions, energy metabolism (boosting energy), and inflammation.

My ultimate (and very sappy) goal: play my little part in helping people become the best version of themselves so that they can be better humans who can truly show up in this world and do their part in making it a better place!
