Did you know your jaw and pelvic floor are connected? 😮

Tightness or tension in the jaw can reflect or contribute to tension in the pelvic floor!

Both areas are part of a larger network of muscles and fascia that work together. Relaxing one often helps relax the other, which is why practices like mindful breathing, jaw relaxation techniques, and pelvic floor exercises are so powerful.

It’s all about finding balance in your body, from top to bottom! 🌿

✨ Pelvic floor tension can build up with stress, leading to discomfort and other pelvic floor symptoms.

🥞 Try visualizing your pelvic floor melting like butter in a warm pan as you breathe deeply. This simple cue can help relax those muscles, easing tension.

💆‍♀️ Remember, not everyone needs Kegels; sometimes, it’s all about letting go.

💜 Follow for more tips on managing pelvic floor symptoms and relaxation techniques!

WHY are these tips important?! 👇

🌸 Staying upright during labour has been proven to shorten the length of your labour, report less pain with upright positions & more satisfaction with pushing 🙌

🌸 Improve your birth experience; women who use upright positions report to feel more confident, in control and positive about their birth.

🌸 A sacral freeing position is any position where your sacrum (where your tailbone is located) is not resting on a surface, taking the weight off the tailbone and instead is “free” (ex: rolling onto your side versus lying on your back) to create more space for birth.

🌸 Research has shown that perineal massage can help teach your brain that these “stretching” sensations are not a threat and therefore reduces tearing, the need for episiotomy and/or perineal pain postpartum.

🌸 Numerous studies have documented the benefits of having a doula present during labor. The goal of a doula is to help the mother experience a positive and safe birth, whether an unmedicated birth or a cesarean.

Pelvic floor tension is extremely common in young, fit folks. It’s common both in those who have given birth and those who haven’t. It’s common in those who have pelvic floor weakness, too.

A tight pelvic floor cannot be a strong pelvic floor. In fact, a tight muscle is often also a weak muscle.

How do you know if you have a tight pelvic floor?

👉The best way is to be assessed by a trained pelvic floor PT. But if that’s not accessible to you, here are some signs that you may have pelvic floor tension:

❎pain with penetrative s*x
❎pain with tampon insertion
❎pin with gynecological exams
❎urinary urgency
❎urinary frequency (feeling like you have a small bladder)
❎leakage
❎tailbone pain
❎constipation

Well there are a few things you need to consider first…

1️⃣ Kegels is NOT the solution to all pelvic health concerns! Kegels are the number one “go to” exercise that women are told to do with any problem in the pelvis. However, kegels are not always recommended and depending on the issue can actually make things worse!🤔 Doing kegels depend on the pelvic floor and how much tone the pelvic floor is carrying. 💪

Once your pelvic floor muscles have full range of motion with normal resting tone (level 1 on the elevator), that’s when you start to progress with strengthening - pelvic floor contractions (aka kegels).

2️⃣ Research has shown that many people are doing kegels wrong, and the best way to make sure you’re doing them correctly is digital palpation (meaning someone internal to feel what happens). This is where a pelvic physiotherapist can guide and give the right feedback to make sure you’re doing it correctly.

3️⃣ You need to consider the whole picture, often it’s not just as simple as working out those muscles. Your sleep, diet, movement, nervous system (and more) all play an important role with your pelvic health. It need to be a holistic treatment approach that includes individualized pelvic floor muscle training.

💥Bottom line: it’s really important to seek professional help from pelvic floor physiotherapist, so they can assess and guide the appropriate pelvic floor muscle training program (including an individualized home exercise program).
