Things I wish every parent knew about fever.
At 2 a.m., that hot forehead feels like an emergency. For most healthy kids, it isn't. Fever is a sign the immune system is doing its job, not a danger on its own.
Here's what we tell families at Thrive Kids Clinic:
Watch your child, not the thermometer. A kid who's sipping fluids, making eye contact, and settling between spikes is usually doing okay, even at 39°C.
Treat for comfort, not for the number. If your child is miserable, achy, or won't drink, acetaminophen or ibuprofen at the right weight-based dose helps them rest. If they're playing and drinking, you don't have to medicate.
Some signs do mean call us or head to the ER: any fever in a baby under 3 months, trouble breathing, very hard to wake, a stiff neck, a rash that doesn't fade when pressed, or a fever past day 5.
If you're up worrying tonight, you're not bothering us. Give us a call. That's why we're here.
