🥩 The carnivore diet is back in the news, but the evidence behind it is limited. While some people say they feel better, the diet excludes all plant foods and promotes low diversity over the long term. Nutrition concerns include nutrient shortfalls, low fibre, and high saturated fat and sodium. Dietitians can support an individual’s health goals without extreme restriction by keeping nutritional adequacy in focus.

As a dietitian, here’s how you can guide clients with confidence:

✔️Acknowledge the appeal, but unpack the risks
✔️ Focus on personalized approaches
✔️ Ensure nutritional adequacy stays front and centre

Proud to see global data that reinforces what we know to be true: dietitian-nutritionists are essential, trusted, and increasingly influential in health systems around the world.

The growth of the profession alongside stronger education standards, ethical frameworks, and expanded practice settings comes at a critical time. As nutrition misinformation continues to spread, this data underscores the importance of protecting professional titles, investing in rigorous education, and supporting strong national and global associations.

A special thank you to our very own Mary Anne at Dietitians of Canada for her leadership and contributions to this important work through ICDA. Efforts like this help strengthen the profession globally and ensure dietitians continue to be recognized as trusted, evidence-based experts. 🌍

01/16/2026

📣 Although the Government of Canada expanded eligible professions under the Student Loan Forgiveness Program, dietitians remain excluded, and progress is still needed to recognize their vital role in health care.
This decision is disheartening and overlooks the essential role registered dietitians play in primary care, chronic disease prevention, food security, and improving health outcomes, particularly for underserved, rural, and remote communities.

What DC is doing:
Dietitians of Canada is actively advocating for inclusion through our work with the Extended Healthcare Professionals Coalition (EHPC). The student loan forgiveness file remains a priority for the EHPC until all member associations are included. We are encouraged that DC’s CEO now serves as Chair of the EHPC, strengthening our collective voice and momentum on this issue.

How you can take action:
➡️ Learn more about DC’s advocacy and why dietitians must be included: https://www.dietitians.ca/Advocacy/Priority-Issues-(1)/Student-Loan-Forgiveness
➡️ Write, call, or meet with your MP to share how student loan forgiveness would support dietitians and patient care in your community
➡️ Reshare this post or create your own and tag your MP to help amplify the message

Together, we can continue pushing for recognition that reflects the real impact of dietitians in Canada’s health system.

//
