Gryffin and Phoenix, our two cuties (now 4 and 7) have been practicing mindfulness and meditation since 2 years old.
My dad was bipolar, my uncles schizophrenic. I always joke and say I won the mental health lottery because although I am definitely very in touch with my emotions they don’t generally take over my mind and thankfully I haven’t had the need to medicate despite an interesting childhood, and a lot of grief over the years. I’m far from perfect (I like to say like @brenebrown “perfectly imperfect”). I’m so blessed that I came out the other side of 8 years of infertility with two gems 💎 💎and my mental health still intact. They say that an infertility diagnosis and journey carries the same grief as someone who has been diagnosed with cancer (likely because of the feeling of lack of control). I don’t know what it’s like to have cancer but I can see that the grief for both of these conditions definitely carry a heavy weight and it’s easy to lose yourself in both journeys. You may lose a child but at least you survive infertility ...whereas in cancer you may not. Worse than grief itself, is when a person has mental illness and can’t process even small griefs and traumas in life leaving them paralyzed and non functional members of society, like my dad years ago. Family and friends are so important and I’m so grateful that I have emotionally connected humans that I can turn to anytime I need. My sister @8teach_her lent us this “breathing ball” to help our children develop calm, relaxed minds using breathing skills and we use headspace, relax Melodies and mind yeti mediation APPs for our kids to train their brains and our own so that when craziness hits (like COVID!) we can at the very least learn to process the events a little easier. Learning how to say no, is so key 🔑 to preserving your energy and directing your resources so you can stay healthy. Saying no to toxic people is an important part of this and surrounding yourself by like minded positive people. Making choices that make sense to you and allow you to take care of you is vital!!! I adore her. She is 8. She is furry. She gives and receives unconditional love. She was there for us to be a shoulder to cry 😢 on through 4 of our 5 miscarriages. She was a walking buddy through two healthy pregnancies. She’s our running/biking partner through COVID19 times. She’s a source of comfort and love and stability for our children through unstable times. She helped our children to become social creatures getting them connected with other dogs and their humans from toddlerhood.
I love being her human! Her name is “Freyja”, which is Norse mythology for “Goddess of Love, beauty and fertility”
