07/03/2023

Did you know the average age of menopause is 51 years old? Did you know that peri-menopause (the years leading up to menopause) can be as long as 10 years. I am 46 in November and in the middle of my peri-menopause years. I work hard to do all “the things” to take care of “me” so I can show up healthy for my family, friends and patients. Does this mean I’m perfect? Nope!! Far from it!!!
November 2020 I hosted my podcast partner to our home with my shirt inside out and we laughed and took this pic. Her comments are below. Forgetting things like that, exaggerated PMS symptoms like insomnia, sudden OA (joint pains), changing menstrual cycles, were the first signs I was starting Perimenopause at the early age of 43. I had seen other patients experience it but I was in denial even after 18 years clinical practice. The concept of “Name it Blame it Tame it” really helped me get on top of it. I recognized through blood testing my day 21 progesterone levels were very low some months, and Estrogen was high. Did I need to test to validate it? Nope, but I did anyway. I started progesterone hormone replacement therapy because Magnesium, my supplement routine, working out, healthy super clean eating were not enough. Thank goodness for my knowledge, acceptance and village. Sometimes you can’t smell your own “B.O.” and my village taught me what was going on so I could sleep again with my PMS. I also had to slow down and set boundaries with the people around me that I love. Moving our mom with severe Alzheimer’s to a nursing home March 2020 woke me up to realize life is short. Finding balance is key to health, success and happiness. I’ve learned to work hard but also play hard and slow down too.

“Repost from • Does it matter that Dr. Tanya has her shirt inside out when we visited her last weekend? Kale no! This is just what a perfectly imperfect kick ass, focused and loving working momma looks like sometimes.
Please comment below and tell us something funny that you did to celebrate our humanity.”

Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful fathering energies.

“Identify With the Father Energy

Anyone can take on the role of the father, so why not be the father to your own body and life? The father energy is one of protection, strength and insight. Other positive father energetic traits are providing structure, law and order, discipline, rationale and logic, understanding and inspiration.

Own your authentic authority which leads to proper discernment and clarity. Lead by example and empower others to do the same.
Honour your father energies this month by taking action, setting boundaries and asserting your independent thinking. Learn to also ask questions from the heart and work towards clarity of mind leading to open communication with your body, yourself and others. Learn to be solid in today’s rapidly changing world. Embracing the father energy leads to healthy self-reliance and this is a powerful position that gives permission to others to do the same.

Pay attention to your body’s signals and know when life stressors are impacting your health and well-being. If you’re not in tune with your body so you know when its vitality is decreasing, your wellness could start going down a slippery slope.

This is where you can be vigilant and establish healthy habits and routines. Create a plan and then take action to implement a healthy-lifestyle regimen, which will pay dividends to the quality of your life.”

Words from Dr Chad Sato and his article titled “Mind-Body-Wellness, The Father Energy”. I couldn’t have written it better.

My dad died in 2009, at the early age of 62. I wasn’t close to him growing up because he had Bipolar that back then wasn’t well managed by the medical world, in my opinion. The very few times I spent time with him, I loved his attention to my needs & his profound insights and love.

The year before he passed I wrote him a letter, (which apparently he framed and read daily) In it, I forgave him for anything he felt guilty for. I love him whole as he is and that I LOVE the “sides” of me that are him. My creative, fun, crazy side, & my deep side. ♥️

PCOS and your Blood Pressure

, known as high blood pressure, is referred to as a "silent killer” because it often has no warning signs.

There are many risk factors for high blood pressure.

These include:

Consuming a high in sodium (salt)
Being a smoker
Lack of activity
Being
Increased age
Stress
Insulin resistance
Family history
Depression
Excessive alcohol consumption
Having other medical conditions such as high cholesterol, insulin resistance, or type 2 diabetes
Certain medications

In a Syndrome like PCOS long term, androgen excess (excess male hormones) can cause metabolic complications that may increase the risk of cardiovascular disorders, that include hypertension (high blood pressure)

Whether hypertension is associated with PCOS independent of obesity remains controversial. However, a study reported, women with PCOS were 40% more likely to have elevated blood pressure than non-PCOS women.

The Androgen Excess and Polycystic Ovarian Societies recommend that blood pressure be obtained in women with PCOS at every visit and that pre-hypertension be detected and treated given the potential benefit of lowering blood pressure for the prevention of CVD.

Additionally, treatment of the risk factors inherent to PCOS, such as hyperandrogenism (high androgens)
insulin resistance, and weight gain,
may minimize the risk not only for the development of hypertension but also for incident cardiovascular disease.

Preventing high blood pressure can start with simple lifestyle management, you can do on your own including:

1) Nutrition limiting sugar & sodium intake

2) Exercise

3) Stress Reduction

Remember knowing the facts, reduces the risks and 80% of cardiovascular disease is preventable according to

If there's one thing I've learned these past few years watching my mom's health decline rapidly with Alzheimer's, is I do not have to stop DREAMING and living my dreams.

I could go into a depression and spend every waking hour with her thinking she only has months left to go...but I choose to live my life in a way that I know she would want me to because she was a dreamer too.

My optimistic side thinks maybe she chose to die of Alzheimer's because she knows how attached to her we were and she wanted a slow exit for us to give us lots of time to process. Maybe she also chose it for herself because she will go out only remembering the good times.

Here is the bottom line…

We can keep moving forward.

We can keep dreaming.

Despite the chaos and setbacks around us! (Cold weather, Epidemics, Dismal News etc)

We can keep making our dreams come true and focus on "health equity", not just "wealth equity".

I learned this term, "health equity" in my favourite book of 2022 "Die with Zero" by Bill Perkins.
When he was 25, Bill gifted his grandmother $10,000 dollars thinking she would be so happy to travel or buy something special. Well she did buy something, a sweater...a sweater for him, her grandson. She had no desire to travel or to buy something fancy for herself.

As we age, we spend less, move less and appreciate memories more than concern ourselves with buying fancy things or experiences. So while we still have gas in the tank, preserve it and protect your health. Your wealth is only valuable while you have your health so dream, plan and create space to enjoy....now!

The experiences or fun do not have to be huge. But ideally would occur regularly. I bought a fancy dress from Artizia, which happened to be on discount and did a photo shoot for my spouse for ♥️Valentines Day♥️. Above, I shared with you one of the less ris·qué photos. LOL. Fun for me and extremely well received by him. I also planned a little weekend get-away to go snow shoeing in a little cottage with a real fire place.
When I see you next, tell me what you have planned? Looking forward to something next, improves your quality of life and lengthens your life! There is science backing that!!

Six Healthy Lifestyle Habits Linked to Slowed Memory Decline

This study found "Six Healthy Lifestyle Habits Linked to Slowed Memory Decline despite APO E 4 carrier status"

EP 59: All about Egg Donation (ft Dr Timea Belej-Rak)

This is a must not miss episode where we interview Ob-Gyn Dr. Timea Belej Rak and Mary Wong gets deeply personal for the first time about her own story with egg donation.

Considering egg donation as an option can be scary. Although this is not one’s first (or even third option), it is a highly effective pathway for those who need it. More importantly, there is a connection fueled by epigenetics that develops between baby and mom during pregnancy. Even though the baby will not inherit her genetics, the baby is 100% biologically hers. That means mom gets to turn on genes through the environment she creates which is why it is important to stay healthy and live a balanced life for a better soil/terrain before, during and after pregnancy.

Dr. Belej-Rak is an obstetrician gynecologist with subspecialty training in fertility.
She believes in supporting the practice, education and research of a healing and prevention-based approach to health and well-being. She has been passionately helping those who struggle to create life for over 15 years. After going through her own fertility journey she made it her mission to increase awareness by writing the book “Embrace Your Fertility” with (co-authors including Dr. Tanya Wyde, ND) to provide a holistic approach, guidance and reassurance to those wishing to conceive.

EP 31: Do you suddenly want a baby more than ever? (Featuring )

Did you ever think that you'd have a life without kids but then your maternal clock kicked in and the next thing you know an insatiable drive to have kids? The drive is there, but then you realize there are technical issues.

When it comes to creating a family, technical issues can arise in many circumstances from blocked fallopian tubes to needing donor eggs or s***m. It can be even more challenging in a same s*x relationship. In some countries, they do not allow adoption to gay parents … which is ridiculous but that’s not todays topic. If you want a baby with your own DNA, you need to find a s***m donor in the instance of a two woman relationship. You need to find an egg donor and a surrogate to carry your baby in the instance of a two man relationship. At the end of the day and beyond the technical challenges, the emotional struggle is not much different as we strive to create our families in heteros*xual relationships with fertility challenges.

We spoke with Jillian Michaels, the iconic personal trainer, best known for being on NBC’s, The Biggest Loser, author, and creator of The Fitness App. Jillian shared her story of how her and her wife, Heidi at the time had two babies a week apart. Curious? You’ve gotta check out this episode to learn more.
