Last full day in PV,Mexico.
Sadly the city’s attendance is down. Even our hotel asked to extend our stay probably indicating that the folks who were moving in tomorrow, have cancelled. Sad for the locals here, that the economy will suffer for a while.

Before we can reach for others with trust and openness, we must turn inward with honesty and compassion. Secure attachment isn’t just something we build between people — it’s something we practice within. When we become a safe place for our own emotions, needs, and fears, we carry that security into our relationships. Healing begins here.

It was such a pleasure to join Dr. Belle (Anabelle Bugatti-Duarte, PhD, LMFT) on her show and spend time talking about something not only dear to my heart but essential for all clinicians to understand—the importance of uncovering and reshaping our clients’ View of Self. One might say this is at the very core of the Emotionally Focused Therapy process, especially when working in EFIT (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy).

In this episode, Dr. Belle and I dive into the powerful and essential topic of View of Self and View of Other in Emotionally Focused Therapy. We explore how the way clients see themselves—shaped by attachment injuries, emotional experiences, and relational patterns—impacts their emotional responses, connection struggles, and their path to healing.
In this episode, we cover:
What “View of Self” really means in the EFT model
How to identify and work with negative self-perceptions in session
Key interventions and markers for effective restructuring
Using the EFT Tango to access and shift internal self-view
How attachment and self-concept intertwine in therapy
This conversation is packed with clinical gems, theory-to-practice insights, and gentle reminders of the deep humanity behind our clients’ struggles.

Whether you’re just beginning your EFT journey or have years of experience, I hope this episode offers new clarity and inspiration for your work.

I'm so excited about the opportunity to travel to Salt Lake City this November and join forces with the incredible Kathryn De Bruin to offer EFCT Externship training for the Northern Utah Emotionally Focused Therapy community.

Every time I work with Kathryn, I come away inspired. She's such a gifted teacher—clear, grounded, and full of heart—and I always learn something new. It's a real privilege to collaborate with her again.

As many of you know, the EFCT Externship is the first step in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy training. It's designed for therapists who want to better understand the power of working with emotion through an attachment lens—especially when helping couples move from disconnection to deep connection.

As I often say, the art of EFT lies in bringing together the map, the interventions, and the person of the therapist. It's this blend of science and humanity that makes EFT so powerful. I can't wait to explore it alongside Kathryn and the wonderful therapists in Utah.

Hope to see you there!

In EFIT, we learn to see anger not as a problem to eliminate, but as a protector—a loyal defender that often rises in the absence of safety. When a client shows us anger, it’s rarely the whole story. Beneath the surface, we often find fear crouched in the shadows—fear of rejection, abandonment, or vulnerability. And at the very center, if we stay with it, we often touch the tender core: a longing to be seen, to be loved, to matter. When we welcome anger with curiosity and compassion, we open the door to the emotions it’s been trying to guard, and to the unmet needs still waiting for connection. This is the art of EFIT—following the signal of anger into the heart of the self.

"Anger wears the armor, but shame holds the wound."
The art of EFT is learning to see beyond the armor. In EFIT, we meet anger and we wonder what it’s protecting. So often, it’s shame underneath, silent and hidden. When we help clients feel safe enough to lower their guard, healing begins. The therapist’s attunement makes room for both the protector and the pain. Learn how to work with all of your client's emotions, not just the emotions you're comfortable engaging, with EFIT - Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy in consultation (individual, dyadic and group) theartofeft.ca
