In my practice I see many people who suffer from lyme disease and may go years without a proper diagnosis. The post above sheds some light into some of the issues around testing and why a diagnosis for lyme can be difficult to attain.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝘆𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲?

Please remember:

➡️ Lyme disease is a clinical diagnosis based on history and physical findings and appropriate laboratory testing is only used to support this diagnosis when indicated.

➡️ People can present with a negative test if tested too early, or if antibiotics have been used early in the course of the disease.

➡️ The “ two- tier” testing offered for Lyme disease may miss approximately 50% or more of people with lyme disease.
Consider laboratory testing that offer more comprehensive forms of testing such as : Elisa, IFA, Immunoblot to name a few. These tests achieve higher sensitivity as they are able to detect specific lyme antigens from several strains and species.

Mold
It’s complex and can seem overwhelming.
It was a topic that I tried to avoid and yet it has become something I talk about in my clinic almost EVERY SINGLE DAY.

When patients have unexplained illnesses or are not improving from chronic conditions, mold can be a usual suspect for root underlying causes.

For some mold exposure may not be problematic but for others it can be detrimental. Mold mycotoxins have the ability to, disrupt the immune system, cause leaky gut, cross the blood brain barrier, slow mitochondria, effect the autonomic system and much more.

If you are have unresolved chronic allergies, brain fog, fatigue and pain. If you have struggled with unresolved health issues despite your healthy lifestyle and diet you may want to assess for mold mycotoxins.

Individualized care is a huge part of naturopathic medicine

Two people can be diagnosed with the same disease such as IBS but how they got there can be very different!

Knowing where body imbalances occurred and where processes became dysregulated is key to healing. This is going to differ greatly from person to person

Have you ever seen a health care practitioner that looks at you individually and NOT just your diagnosis?

Drop me a note on your experience.

In a healthy body, the process of detoxification runs smoothly. But when we are toxic, the mechanism for detoxification in the liver gets sluggish, and certain toxins can remain active longer than we want or than our systems can handle. This makes us sick and impedes normal metabolism. It also causes fluid retention, bloat, puffiness, and more.
here are a few ways you can support your body’s natural ability to detoxify

💊 Many of my patients who have struggled with LONG TERM constipation find their bowel movement regulate when they begin to supplement with magnesium.

💊 Magnesium deficiency is common due to loss of magnesium in our soil and thus in our vegetable content. It is estimated that over 60% of people are deficient in magnesium

💊 I usually recommend magnesium bisgyclinate and increase to bowel tolerance. A typical dose can begin at 200mg but some people may need to go up to >1000mg to correct this deficiency.

💊 Have you ever tried magnesium for constipation. Drop me a p**p emoji if you have.

As a naturopath, I often am invited into people’s healing journey. And I feel the weight of the frustration when things don’t go the way we planned, when my patients experience setbacks or flares, or worsening pain.

The human mind wants to simplify the process to a formula, a protocol, a step-by-step guide but the reality is that it is not always that simple.

We expect healing to look like a formula A + B =C or to be given a step by step guide but so often this is not the case.

I have learned a few things from patients over the years:
* Mindset is everything
* Your body has an innate wisdom towards health
* Growth happens in ways you could never imagine

A comprehensive stool analysis is the best way to get a look into your gut microbiome. we usually do a test called GI360 by Doctors Data.

There are 3 important pieces of information that a comprehensive stool test analysis can help uncover.

Are there Pathogenic Microbes?
- This would be similar to a stool test run by a medical doctor. These types of pathogenic bacteria are serious may cause blood in your stool or excessive diarrhea. The difference is the profile here is a bit more comprehensive and we are also looking at 3x stool

 Are the microbes diversified?
- We know that a key factor to a healthy gut micribiome is not just having A LOT of good bacteria but having a DIVERSE gut micribiome. The science here is not perfect but we do know that gut microbiome that s diversified meaning lots of different types of bacteria is protective against disease and healthy. The stool test will give a snap shot to show if you are lacking in this diversification or not.

Is there gut dysbiosis or overgrowth?
-At low levels certain microbes are neither good nor bad but when there are too much of them they can become problematic.

Studies have shown that those born vaginally, breast fed, and with little antibiotic intervention were best set up to have a gut microbiome that was plentiful and diverse.

This type of gut microbiome can help aid against many childhood issues such as increased food intolerences , allergies, eczema, and asthma. It has also been linked to later on health conditions like diabetes and autoimmune conditions.

This isn’t to make you feel guilty if you or your child was delivered via C-section or not breastfed, but rather to give you information to better understand your health and areas where extra support may be needed. I am 0/3 on the questions asked above (!) and am able to set up realistic health outcomes because I know how this might impact my health.

If you grew up with a severely compromised gut microbiome, your health journey may be about having more good days than bad days versus health perfection.

Dysbiosis is defined as negative changes in your body’s microbial ecosystem.

There are many types of microorganism in your gut and they are mainly made up of harmless bacteria, yeasts, viruses, and archaea. These microbiomes live in harmony, but they are sensitive to external changes that can cause imbalances.

Think of an ecosystem that includes birds, flies and frogs. If you eliminate the frogs you could have an overgrowth of flies and perhaps some birds would die as a result of not having frogs for food.

This ecosystem would be imbalanced and that would be similar to gut dysbiosis.

Gut dysbiosis is much more common in our day and age as a result of lifestyle and dietary changes such as:
- increase in processed food
-increase in pesticides and herbicides
- increase in antibiotic usage

The good news is that we can alter our gut microbiome for the good and correct those imbalances.
It might just take a bit of digging with a thorough intake and proper testing 🤓

Our brilliant bodies are designed to respond to stress.

However when prolonged or multiple stressors exist and your HPA axis becomes activated long term you can begin to see signs of cortisol dysfunction.

Below I have charted what signs low vs high cortisol look like.
One classic symptom I want to highlight that is usually a tell tale sign of HPA axis dysfunction is wired but tired. This can occur when you throw off your natural cortisol rhythm.

Can you relate to any of the symptoms above ? drop me an emoji in the posts below if you have been here!

Your body’s response to stress is not just mental but physical.

Doctors are now being retrained to ask about childhood trauma as they have found that people who have endured a chronic state of stress as a child are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune conditions etc.

The mind body connection is huge.

Your body overtime can become resistant to cortisol which means that your inflammation response never shuts off. Chronic inflammation can impact virtually every system.

You may not be able to change your external situation but you can always change your internal response.

What are some ways you combat stress?

If you have found yourself in a stressful situation for more then 3 months, your body can begin to show signs of HPA dysfunction.

Stress which was meant to be short term, has become a chronic state that people live in and our bodies are suffering the consequence.

The “HPA” in HPA axis dysfunction refers to your hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands. Which are all part of your endocrine/hormonal system and communicate through what’s known as the HPA axis.

Essentially under stress your brain sends a message to your adrenal glands to produce cortisol.

Adrenal fatigue was a term used to suggest that over time the adrenals burn out or lost function. However a better understanding is more so that the body becomes less sensitive to the cortisol hormone over time.

Think about it this way: if the system is constantly pumping out cortisol, even when the threats to safety are minor, the system gets desensitized to the stress signals. The result is a stress response that isn’t functioning properly.

Over time we may become accustomed to this stress response mentally but our body suffers from a fatigue that is harder to shake.

Oneo of the best and most challenging ways to support HPA axis dysfunction is to manage stress. Meditation, relaxation techniques, deep breathing, journaling are but a few ways to bring the body from a fight or flight stress state to a calm state.

If you are interested in learning more about HPA axis drop me an emjoi that represents calm to you in the comments below.

There are a few types of fatigue that I see in my practice on a regular basis.

There is the normal sense of tired from lack of sleep and busy schedule that our society thrives on.

There is the type of tired that could be due to a medical reason such as:
-anemia, low thyroid function, poor nutrition etc.

But then there is a the type of fatigue that has also been called chronic fatigue or myalgic encephalomyelitis CFS/ME

This type of fatigue is a lot worse. It’s the type of fatigue that causes people to lose their jobs. It’s the type of fatigue where people can’t get out of the bed.
It’s the type of fatigue that leaves people feeling isolated and hopeless.
The tired will never go away.

Many of my patients who have been diagnosed with CFS/ME believe that there is not much hope for them. They have been written off by the medical community which cannot fit them into their bucket.

But there is hope, even in the last few years practicing I have been seen great strides in the research world offering possible explanations and solutions for people with CFS/ ME.

CFS is an umbrella term for possible things that have not yet been assessed.

Below are a few things we unpack with patients struggling from CFS/ME.

I do believe that the body can heal and have learned so much from my patients who have struggled and regained their health after dealing with CFS.
