Canada is entering another wildfire season, and the risk doesn’t start when you see smoke — it starts long before.

During the 2023 wildfire season, smoke travelled across continents, exposing millions to unhealthy air. For over 5 million Canadians living with asthma, COPD, and other lung conditions, that exposure isn’t just uncomfortable — it can quickly become dangerous.

Wildfire smoke is now considered one of the fastest-growing environmental threats to respiratory health. Even short-term exposure can lead to serious breathing complications, including spikes in emergency visits that last for days after the air clears.

And here’s the biggest concern: many people wait until they smell smoke or see hazy skies before taking action.

Don’t wait for the smoke to arrive. Get prepared now with expert guidance, practical tips, and tools to protect your lung health this wildfire season.

With the right support and guidance, managing COPD becomes easier. Through My Lung Health Coach, participants gain the confidence and tools to take control of their lung health.

My Lung Health Coach is an evidence-based, person-centred COPD self-management and education service delivered virtually by our Lung Health Coaches, who are Certified Respiratory Educators (CREs). This service links community members to their very own CRE, who will provide support, information, and coaching so that you can better manage your COPD.

Once you sign up, we will mail you a booklet called “Living with COPD”, which is a resource that covers the topics that will be discussed during the program.

As we approach the end of our fiscal year, we wanted to reach out with a simple but important message, thank you! ❤️

Because of supporters like you, the Lung Health Foundation has been able to help thousands of people across Canada live healthier, fuller lives.

From supporting people living with COPD and asthma, to funding research and advocacy for cleaner air, your generosity makes this work possible.

But our work is far from finished.

Right now, too many people are still struggling to breathe. Too many families are facing lung conditions without the support they need. And as we close this fiscal year, we are working hard to ensure we can continue delivering the programs, education, and research that Canadians rely on.

If you are able, please consider making a gift before March 31 to help us finish the year strong.

Every gift, no matter the size, makes a real difference. Donate today: https://bit.lunghealth.ca/4t6NX51

The Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Formulary was recently updated, and we welcome the inclusion of the AeroChamber2go* Chamber for eligible patients.

This means that, with a valid prescription, children aged 12 and under may be eligible for reimbursement for one chamber per year.

Correct inhaler technique plays a key role in managing asthma—but it isn’t always easy. Up to 80% of people experience challenges using their inhaler effectively, particularly during flare-ups or when symptoms occur outside the home.

Improved access to portable devices can help support proper inhaler use when it matters most.

If your child uses a pMDI inhaler, it may be helpful to speak with a healthcare provider about whether a chamber or spacer could be a good addition to their asthma management plan.

The story of the Lung Health Foundation

For more than a century, we worked tirelessly to be the recognized leader, voice and primary resource in lung health under the Ontario Lung Association name. Meanwhile, lung disease continued to place a profound burden on patients and their families, and placed a large – and growing – economic burden on every provincial healthcare system across Canada.

Given the staggering gaps we had uncovered in the prevention, diagnosis, and care of lung disease, it became clear that it was time to bring the staff and board of the association together to make some big, bold changes to our approach.

In 2020 and beyond, we are charting a new path forward. We are empowering all Canadians to improve their lung health, and re-introducing ourselves to Canadians under a new name,

We are the Lung Health Foundation. And lung health starts now!
