At around 33 years old, mark Forbess was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Over time, his heart health began to decline, and Mark was accepted into Toronto general hospital heart failure treatment program before experiencing a catastrophic heart event requiring a transplant.

While in the ICU waiting for a transplant, Mark would spend time in the hospital atrium, playing the grand piano thanks to the encouragement of one of his nurses, Frances Ausley, and Rose Grace from the Humanities in Medicine Department.

Mark also connected with other patients thanks to the creativity of the nursing staff. They set up a series of games from dominoes to a "Cardiac Device 500" footrace between patients around the hospital unit, measured by the distance they walked each day.

Toronto General Hospital Hospice RN Kim Everett was honored by receiving the Mae Berry Award. Kim was nominated by her hospice colleagues for being a role model to others, providing exceptional care and compassion to her hospice patients, and serving every day with excellence. Many examples were shared in the nomination; however, this comment truly sums up Kim’s Service Excellence: “Kim gives effortlessly and compassionately, with no regard to her busy schedule. She adjusts her schedule to take patients outside on nice days to enjoy the sun.” You will find Kim serving Toronto General Hospital Hospice patients around the Red Wing area. Great job, Kim!
