As many as 20 percent of Canadians are living with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but not all know it yet because it can be tricky to diagnose.

If you are experiencing symptoms of IBS or have any concerns, stop by and speak with our pharmacist.

There’s no way around it, back acne (aka “bacne”) isn’t fun. It can be stubborn and uncomfortable, and can also appear in other places, like on the chest, upper arms, and buttocks.

Body breakouts are mainly caused by overactive oil glands, excess dead skin cells, and bacteria. You can prevent pimples on your body by wearing loose clothing, showering after exercise, and using non-comedogenic body care products (which won’t clog pores).

Over-the-counter treatments can help with mild breakouts. Ask our pharmacist to walk you through the options, from body washes to creams and much more.

Snowstorms, black ice, and otherwise hazardous conditions are all part of winter driving, and accidents and breakdowns do happen. That’s why it’s so important to have an emergency kit in your vehicle.

A basic kit should include:
• Food that won’t spoil
• Bottled water (in plastic bottles so they won’t break if they freeze)
• First aid kit
• Flashlight and candle with matches

Stop by the pharmacy for essentials to add to your kit.

Red eyes can signal several different possible health issues, however in many cases there are things you do to help prevent it:

Avoid rubbing your eyes
Keep contact lenses clean and wear only for as long as directed
Make sure to remove eye makeup properly
Take regular breaks when you’re looking at a computer screen for a long period of time
Avoid eye irritants such as dust, smoke, or pet dander

Ask our pharmacist for advice on when to see a doctor. They can also review the over-the-counter eye drop options for dry eyes, allergies and other common irritants that can cause red eyes.

It’s Canada Day weekend and we’re all ready to celebrate!

If your family loves fireworks, it’s best to leave the big displays to the experts. Even using hand-held sparklers in your backyard comes with some dangers, so it’s important to keep these three safety tips in mind:

1/ Keep sparklers away from young kids. They burn extremely hot and if not handled correctly, can ignite clothing, and cause severe burns.
2/ Older children should handle sparklers carefully, under close adult supervision.
3/ Sparklers stay hot for several minutes after they go out. Keep a bucket of water nearby to drop them in when everyone is finished.

Our pharmacy team wishes you and your family a fun and safe Canada Day weekend!

Many of us enjoy a good morning cup of coffee, but have you ever asked, “Can I take my medications with my morning coffee?”?

Coffee can affect how some drugs work in your body, in some cases making your medication absorb into your system faster, which could be an issue.
Our pharmacist can review everything you’re taking, including prescriptions, vitamins, and other supplements to check for interactions and advise on the best times of day to take them.

Almost 6 million Canadians have prediabetes, meaning their blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Here are some key facts about diabetes.

Symptoms: You can have type 2 diabetes without any obvious warning signs.

Risk factors: Being over the age of 40, having a close relative with diabetes, or being of African, Arab, Asian, Hispanic, or South Asian descent all put you at higher risk.

Prevention: Eating well, moving more, and maintaining a healthy body weight are the most effective things you can do to prevent type 2 diabetes.

Keep your little ones safe this Halloween – and have fun on the spookiest night of the year by planning ahead and following a few golden rules:
• Give each child a flashlight to carry to make them more visible to cars and other pedestrians and encourage them to always cross at the corner.
• Let kids draw or design the jack-o-lantern, then have an adult carve it.
• Choose costumes that are fitted (which don’t pose a tripping hazard) and use makeup instead of masks, so they don’t interfere with your child’s vision or breathing.

Pollinators like bees are vital to growing the foods we need, and most will ignore us if we leave them alone.

But do you know what to do when you or someone with you has been stung by a bee or wasp?

For most people, a sting is just painful. Dropping into the pharmacy for pain medications or an antihistamine can do the trick!

But for a few, it can be life-threatening. You may not know you're one of them until after you've been stung. A severe allergic reaction to bee stings (anaphylaxis) requires emergency treatment.

Talk with us to know the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, and what you can do to protect you and your family. Learn more: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/bee-stings/symptoms-causes/syc-20353869

It’s Thyroid Awareness Month in Canada—did you know that 1 in 10 Canadians have some type of thyroid condition?

It is important to tell our pharmacy team if you are on any medication for a thyroid condition, as this could interact with other medications, including over-the-counter products.

With the days warming up, it’s tempting to get out into the sun. But, if you don’t protect yourself, ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause sunburn, eye cataracts, skin aging and skin cancer—even on cloudy days!

If you check the weather before heading outside, check the day’s UV index, too. This index helps measure the risk from the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays. The higher the index, the greater the need to take safety precautions. Find it here: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/weather-health/uv-index-sun-safety.html

Visit our pharmacy for sunscreen options. And if you do get a burn, come see us for first aid advice!
