During the winter, you’re spending more time indoors, breathing in triggers like dust mites and pet dander, and when you do venture out on a chilly day, inhaling the cold air can also trigger an asthma attack.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to help you breathe a little easier:

Run a humidifier in your home, to maintain a relative humidity of 35-50%.
Keep your home tidy by reducing clutter and dusting and vacuuming regularly.
When you go outside, place a scarf or mask over your nose and mouth.

Got your first nasty cold of the season? That sore throat, runny nose, and/or mild cough is probably going to last one to two weeks.

Although you can be contagious throughout the time you have symptoms, you’re most likely to infect someone else during the first few days. If you can, stay home to rest and recover, and reduce the risk of passing it on to someone else, particularly those around you who may be at risk of complications.

If you have concerns about worsening symptoms or are wondering if it’s time to see your doctor, our pharmacist is here to help.

Winter is coming, and so are eczema flare-ups for many living with the condition.

The itch that often is associated with eczema can be the hardest part of living with the condition. Consider these tips from the Eczema Society of Canada to help calm the itch:

Keep nails smooth and trimmed short to reduce damage from scratching.
Try a cool compress or take a cool bath or shower.
Try to reduce stress as much as possible. Find activities you enjoy and help you to relax.
The use of moisturizer may help to relieve dry skin and itch.

When your child is sick with an infection (bacterial or viral), it is common to also have a fever. Fever will not hurt your child. Usually, it goes away after 72 hours (3 days). The right method to take your child's temperature depends on their age.

You wake up in the middle of the night with chills, even though you’re buried in your duvet. Or, your child is crying, with a forehead that’s hot to the touch. All signs point to fever, but you’ll need to get out your thermometer to confirm.

A fever is a temporary rise in body temperature (anything over 37.6°C or 99.7°F) designed to fight off infection. Depending on the style of thermometer, you can take someone’s temperature in the ear, under the tongue, or in the armpit.

Ask our pharmacist about the correct dosing for fever-reducing medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen, to help keep you or your family comfortable until the fever passes.
