Ontario Physiotherapy Association (OPA) The Ontario Physiotherapy Association (OPA) is a dynamic health care professional organization with

In 1920, Enid Graham, a most remarkable Canadian physiotherapist, fought for and received Dominion Charter for the CPA. From 1939 to 1944, Graham chaired the Canadian Military Affairs Committee and succeeded in securing the granting of officer rank to all CPA physiotherapists who volunteered for overseas duty during World War II. Of the 340 qualified physiotherapists in Canada, 138 volunteered for overseas duty, were paid and had privileges equal to male volunteers of similar rank. Enid Graham is to the profession of physiotherapy in Canada what
Florence Nightingale was to the profession of nursing worldwide. She was a visionary, a true leader and the ultimate
champion for the profession as it has evolved. On December 31, 1993, with the proclamation of the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) and the Physiotherapy Act, physiotherapists were recognized by the provincial government as one of a restricted number of self-governing health care professions. The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario is the regulatory and disciplinary body for physiotherapists in Ontario. From its inception, OPA has been a strong voice for the profession because of physiotherapists' commitment to work together through a united professional association.

OPA submitted a response to the annual budget consultation. Our response illustrates how physiotherapists can contribute to building a ‘more competitive, resilient and self-reliant province”, part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario. Jody Lemieux is a registered physiotherapist at the Huron Shores Family Health Team in rural Northern Ontario. With more than 30 years of clinical experience, Jody has worked across hospital, private practice, home care, and community settings. For the past two and a half years, she has been practicing in a primary care team, supporting a large and geographically dispersed population across Blind River, Thessalon, Bruce Mines, and Richards Landing.

Jody’s move into a primary care team was motivated by a desire to work in preventive care. After years in acute and inpatient hospital care, particularly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, she observed many hospital admissions that she felt could have been prevented with earlier intervention.

As Ontario marks one year of its Primary Care Action Plan, the Ontario Physiotherapy Association (OPA) is calling for a critical shift in how we talk about healthcare professionals and their unique roles and value in primary care delivery. Stop using the term “allied health” and start naming the specific expertise that matters to patients.

We are excited to see the op-ed written by OPA CEO Sarah Hutchison on this important topic being picked up on other platforms. Thank you for sharing, Healthy Debate.

As our health system continues to buckle under multiple demands, we need more physiotherapists working to full scope of practice.
