Have you thought about your microbiome lately? Every child on the spectrum should look into this and deal with the root cause of their neurodevelopmental issue.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder that affects normal brain development. The recent finding of the microbiota–gut–brain axis indicates the bidirectional connection between our gut and brain, demonstrating that gut ...

Ever wondered if your child has parasites? It is a very common comorbid issue for children on the spectrum. Testing for parasites can be done however false negatives do happen. Sometimes just a good history is all you need. Symptoms to look for with parasitic infections are:
#1 symptom: Chronic constipation
Diarrhea (commonly from giardia)
Intestinal discomfort
Bloating
Gas
Dark circles under the eyes
Itchy skin
Skin rashes
Anger and ‘crazy-type’ behaviors
Impulsivity
Seizures
Depression and Suicidal Behavior
Brain fog/inability to learn
Chronic fatigue
PANS
Sinus problems
Respiratory Issues
Nausea
Mouthing
Nail biting
Drooling
Teeth grinding
Hair pulling
Headaches
Immune system dysregulation
Iron deficiency

Not only is glyphosate a known carcinogen there is emerging research that it also negatively impacts our microbiome. Recent data suggests that it promotes pathogenic bacteria and lowers lactobacilus species in the gut which are butyrae producing bacteria. Studies have also revealed low butyrate levels in autistic kids. I would avoid glyphosate in your children's diet and protect their microbiome. The most contaminated foods are soy, corn, wheat, canola oil and flax. Eating organic helps!

How much Aluminum is your baby/child exposed to? Right from conception our babies are exposed in utero to metals. Then add infant formula and vaccines to the mix and you have the perfect storm of aluminum toxicity. Your best strategy is avoidance of Aluminum in your daily life. Some known sources of Aluminum are infant formula, vaccines, drinking water, deodorant, cookware, liptsticks etc. There has been some links to Aluminum toxicity and the development of Autism. Drinking mineral water with high amounts of silica (such as Fiji) help with removal of Aluminum from the body.

Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and aluminum (Al) were determined in 437 individual samples of infant formulae, oral electrolytes and 5% glucose solutions available in Canada. In the electrolytes, Cd and Pb concentrations were all below 0.01 and 0.041 ng g[−1] ...

Gut butter is rich in butyric acid which fuels the cells of the colon promoting healing. Kids on the spectrum have been shown to have lower levels of butyrate producing bacteria in their gut. So. Spread this butter on your toast to raise those butyrate levels and heal that gut!

SIBO is a very common comorbid condition of autism. It is important to remember that certain probiotics will make bloating, gas and abdominal distension, abdominal pain and constipation worse with SIBO. If you are taking a probiotic with lactobacillus or Bifidus bacteria you are adding fuel to the fire. Switch to a spore based probiotic as these bacteria stay in spore form until they reach the large intestine. The large intestine is where you want to repopulate your good bacteria. The spore formed bacteria with the most research behind them are Bacillus Coagulans, Bacillus Subtilis and Bacillus Clausii.

Are you suffering from a weak PST enzyme? Do you have a phenol intolerance? Then you need more veggies from the Brassica family in your diet. They are a rich source of sulforaphane and it increases the function of the enzyme (PST) that breaks down phenols. It is worth mentioning that histamine and some neurotransmitters are also degraded by the PST enzyme. This means that a weak PST enzyme can cause a host of other problems like histamine issues. Other vitamins/minerals that support the PST enzyme are folic acid, hydroxycobalamin, vitamin B6 and Magnesium. Zinc is important for a lot of kids on the spectrum but too much of the mineral can have inhibitory effects on your PST enzyme. Best to check your zinc levels before supplementing.

What are phenols? And are they helpful or harmful? There seems to be some confusion out there. Let me explain. Polyphenols are immensely important and protect the body in many ways such as The way your body naturally responds to inflammation or how well you balance glucose levels. In addition they fend off free radicals and oxidative stress, support heart health and boost the body’s immune system. However, some kids especially those with autism, have low sulphate levels or have issues with the enzyme (PST) that degrades phenols. This is where the problem lies. If this system becomes backed up then symptoms begin to appear. Watch for my next post on how to support the PST enzyme!

Other Sources of Phenols that we are exposed to via inhalation, skin contact and ingestion.
Bisphenol A, B
Various herbicides
Various pesticides
Various fungicides
Triclosan - The well known hand sanitizer
Tolulene
Xylenol
All of these environmental toxins should also be avoided as they will use up the valuable sulphates in your body for detoxification. This leaves a paucity of sulphate for phenols in your food creating symptoms such as tantrums, night waking, head banging etc.

Wondering what to do when your child is dealing with a phenol sensitivity? Try to eliminate the foods with the highest concentration of phenols. See the list in the post. It is important to know that you can’t remove every last phenol from your child’s diet. You can also add an enzyme to help break down the remaining culprits called “No Fenol” by Houston Enzymes.
