SickKids Caliper Project

SickKids Caliper Project The CALIPER (Canadian Laboratory Initiative on Pediatric Reference Intervals) Project and Mother & Child Health Initiative

CALIPER is a nation-wide initiative aimed to improve the diagnosis and monitoring of children and adolescents with medical concerns. Our main objective is to establish a comprehensive database of reference intervals for blood test results in children and adolescents. To date, CALIPER has recruited over 14,000 healthy children from birth to 18 years of age to develop gender- and age-specific refere

nce intervals for over 200 biomarkers (medical tests), improving diagnosis in many areas, including cardiology, nephrology, critical care, and oncology. To learn how to become involved as a participant, volunteer, or organization, please visit the Families, Volunteers, and Community Partners section on our website. CALIPER has expanded to include The Mother & Child Health Initiative. This initiative is designed to fill current gaps in reference intervals during pregnancy, improving medical assessment and risk identification for both mother and child. To learn how to participate, please visit the Participants section on our website (www.caliperproject.ca/mchi).

Our Story

The CALIPER (Canadian Laboratory Initiative on Paediatric Reference Intervals) Project is a multi-centre, nation-wide initiative aimed at developing complete and accurate paediatric reference intervals. The CALIPER Project is designed to fill the gaps that currently exist in paediatric reference intervals. To date, CALIPER has recruited over 10,000 healthy children from birth to 18 years of age to donate a small sample of blood, which is used to develop gender- and age-specific reference intervals for multiple blood tests. CALIPER has already developed reference intervals for over 170 biomarkers (medical tests), which can be used to improve diagnosis in many areas, including cardiology, nephrology, critical care and oncology. CALIPER will continue to work towards developing reference values for additional tests, and has made all data collected publically available through an online database for doctors to use in practice. The CALIPER reference intervals are being adapted by hospital laboratories across Canada and globally and helping to improve diagnosis and monitoring of children with medical concerns. If you are a physician or researcher interested in learning more about the study or accessing the CALIPER reference intervals, please visit the Laboratory Professionals section on our website. To learn how to become involved as a participant, volunteer, or organization, please visit the Families, Volunteers, and Community Partners section on our website.
