Most toddlers aren’t “misbehaving” they simply lack the words to express their feelings.
When my son began getting frustrated, I realized something important: he wasn’t intentionally being difficult; he simply didn’t know how to identify his emotions.
To address this, we introduced a simple feelings flip chart during playtime.
Now, instead of melting down, I can guide him to articulate his feelings more effectively by saying things like, “I’m mad,” “I’m sad,” or “I’m frustrated.”
This small shift marks the beginning of developing emotional intelligence.
Children can’t regulate their emotions if they can’t name them.
Teaching children to label their feelings equips them with the tools they need to manage them effectively.
