I am honored to have spoken at the Life Rebalanced Live virtual conference (https://lnkd.in/g2Ct9Czw), speaking in a session on neuroplasticity’s role in vestibular care. Grateful to VeDA organizing and to the engaged participants who asked great questions. Thanks to and for keeping it engaging and surprisingly efficient across so much content.
Here are my 5 key takeaways!
1. Your Brain Can Adapt and Heal:
Neuroplasticity means your brain can rewire itself to improve balance and reduce dizziness. With the right approach, progress is possible at any stage.
2. Early and Consistent Effort Pays Off
Starting rehabilitation early prevents compensations from forming, but even if symptoms are chronic, progress is still possible with the right strategies. Repetition of movement-based exercises help your brain learn new ways to process balance signals. Externally focused feedback can be a helpful assist!
3. Targeted Mulit-Sensory Rehabilitation is Key
Assessing the vestibular system in concert with other sensory systems (neck and vision) can reveal hidden weaknesses and guide treatment. A multi-sensory rehabilitation approach helps retrain the brain’s integration centers which encode sense of upright and spatial perception.
4. Goldilocks (80/20) Rule:
Neuroplasticity is best harnessed when the exercise is challenging but not overwhelmingly difficult. If the nervous system feels its failing it will enter threat surveillance mode making it impossible to learn. If something is too easy it won’t gain ground, in fact it will actually regress. Something to aim for is 80% success/20% mistakes - your brain can understand errors and make it targeted corrections. Staying engaged and gradually challenging yourself enhances recovery.
5. Your Journey is Unique
No two recoveries are the same, and fluctuations are part of the process. Personalized rehab, psychosocial support, and expecting improvement are crucial for success.
Thanks to for helping organize the space.
