How should we understand and live out scripture in our time? This Sunday we will consider how Paul’s approach to scripture in 2 Corinthians 3 is reflected in our church’s Statement on Scripture, especially the affirmation that it is “a library of books that speaks in many voices… written in diverse times and places, and reflect the languages, cultures, and conditions under which they were written.” Yet many continue to read it as factual history, struggling to reconcile contradictions or misusing it to condemn people and justify marginalization and hate. How can we learn to read scripture together, not literally, but in light of the Spirit?

You can participate via live video as usual or join us in person at: 💒 320 Richmond Street East, Suite 101, Toronto, ON M5A 1P9.

In this live lecture, John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will examine the history of Corinth and the rise of its Christian community. We will consider how the issues Paul and others address in their letters to the Corinthian church reveal patterns of factionalism and theological conflict that continue to shape the development of Christianity today.

Can you be a Christian if you don’t believe in the Resurrection?
We often hear this question during the Q&A session at the end of our live lectures on the Centre Place channel. We will address this question tomorrow during our Easter service.

Celebrate Easter with our global community as we contemplate life, death, and the eternal, focusing on the earliest formulation of the gospel—“that Christ died… was buried… was raised… and appeared.”

Jesus’ followers expected to experience the Kingdom of God on earth, but since they misunderstood what that Kingdom would look like, they were initially profoundly confused by his ex*****on. As Paul testifies, it was only after female and male disciples began experiencing Christ as risen and alive that they developed a new understanding of what is imperishable and eternal. They had to let go of what they expected in order to receive the real gospel. What expectations do we carry today that prevent us from receiving the same good news Paul proclaims in 1 Corinthians 15? If the earliest gospel was so simple, what does it look like to live it now—not as an idea, but as something tangible in our lives and in our community?

Genesis describes the Garden of Eden as a paradise and even after Adam and Eve are expelled from it, they and their descendants for generations were said to live lives that extended to nearly a thousand years. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will locate Eden and the Bible within the framework of ancient Golden Age myths, along with the development and deconstruction of the idea of progress.

“Love is patient; love is kind…” The Love Chapter in 1 Corinthians 13 is often quoted at weddings—but what kind of love is Paul actually describing, and why does it matter for Christian life and community? This Palm Sunday, our co-pastor Roger Dodson—who has officiated hundreds of weddings—reflects on the kind of love that, according to Paul, never ends. How do we encounter the love that never fails this Holy Week?
