It is estimated TMJ Disorders account for 30% of the adult/elderly population and it is the second most common behind . There is a very poor public (and often clinical) understanding of the joint and no awareness of where to go to get relief from this condition. Most dental and physical therapy programs barely scratch the surface of this joint. Coming out of my Doctoral program we only had 1 day devoted to TMJ, one of the most complex joints in the human body. Traditional training programs unfortunately don’t give this area the spotlight it deserves.
It is generally understood in clinical practice that there is currently no “cure” for these disorders. Just because there is no cure doesn’t mean we don’t have many ways to reduce symptoms, improve range of motion and restore function to the area. In fact, often the relief begins after the initial treatment done at the end of our initial evaluation.
The stress that people have been under over the past few years cannot be overlooked. People hold a lot of this stress in this area of the body. The low back, head and neck tends to take the lion’s share of the tension in our bodies. It’s no shock these are the most common areas of pain for which people seek therapy.

😕This belief has those with what some refer to as a pelvic floor that is “Hypertonic, has excessive tension, is over active, doesn’t relax and or needs to regain it’s optimal range of motion” 🤨 NOT practice Hypopressive training.

Patients often complain that they ‘slept wrong and woke up with a stiff neck’. I have a feeling I know why this particular patient woke up sore… for starters, he was in my bed!
🏡 can create a lot of tightness in your muscle (the largest rotator cuff muscle in your shoulder). When it gets this way it alters the mechanics of your shoulder throwing off your scapulohumeral rhythm.
💡Try this strengthening exercise instead of stretching to get some lengthening on that muscle while retraining and strengthening it.
⌨️Also try a by to ensure the shoulders stay in a neutral position as you work allowing the subscapularis to relax more.
😮You’ll have less corrective exercises if you don’t ask the muscle to work all day!

He’s our fabulous physiotherapist! He came all the way to Toronto from New York City, with his wife, dog and adorable twin girls in tow, to resume his practice here.
We waited for years for the right physiotherapist to join our crew! Brett is a skilled and thoughtful practitioner - he understands that a thorough assessment and a proper diagnosis is paramount to your recovery. If we don’t understand exactly what is going on, how can we fix ya? And Brett is hands-on - we agree that modalities like ultrasound or laser are an adjunct, not the main factor in your healing.
Also? Brett is obsessed with jaws. TMJ is is his passion, and he’s more than happy to glove up and get inside your mouth - there are muscles there you guys! If you have jaw issues you need to meet your pterygoids - it makes all the difference. There’s a reason dentists and oral specialists refer to Brett.

Some of you embraced the pandemic by seamlessly switching to online activities - I’ll admit that I resisted this wherever possible.
I didn’t do a single online work out.
I want to be in a room with people. I like the intentionality of being in a space. I want to be seen by my instructor. I want to hear other people breathing and to feel their energy, the collective energy of us getting together.
And as the world opens back up and returns to this new normal, I’m just not ready to join a large group of people. Truthfully, I never really liked disappearing into a class of 20 people anyway.
So doing yoga today, with Alysa, in person was so needed. There was just one other person in the class and she limits it to 4 anyway, but this semi-private semi-group class with windows open and sunlight streaming in was just what it needed. To move my body without needing to move my coffee table out of the way. Being with a few others safely, comfortably, intentionally.

🤔Ever wonder what jaw clicking is? It is often completely normal however in many cases it is a dysfunction that can progress to TMJ Disorder. Movement of the TMJ is the most complex of all joints in the body.
🗣The jaw is used more than all other joints as well. When the jaw clicks for years, many people develop a disc displacement that can cause the jaw to lock open or closed.
