The perfect bedtime routine can be achieved to start off a great night of sleep for your baby. The best part is that it can be incorporated as early as day 1! Find out the tips Good Night Sleep Site suggests ⬇️

Consistent and calming bedtime routine can be incorporated as early as day 1. From the moment you bring your baby home your bedtime routine will be a time for feeds and cuddles, and an incredible time for bonding and preparing your baby for a night of restful sleep. The predictability of a bedtime routine will help your baby predict what to expect, which can also really help to alleviate bedtime sleep struggles.

The bedtime that you create for your baby will change as your baby gets older but there are a few steps that will remain:

• Make Time for It

Allow for 15 to 30 minutes prior to your baby’s bedtime to incorporate your calming and consistent bedtime routine.

• Create the Right Environment

It’s important to create a soothing, safe, and relaxing environment before bedtime.

Here are some of the best tools you can use to create that perfect sleep environment:

~ A certified standard crib with a firm mattress and fitted crib sheet.

~ Room darkening shades or blackout blinds to keep the room dark.

~ A white noise machine to help drown out household sounds and noises from outside.

• Choose the Right Activities

Including the right calming activities at bedtime can cue your baby that it's time for sleep. A bath and massage can help to create a more peaceful bedtime. JOHNSON'S baby 3-Step Bedtime Routine was developed to help babies sleep better in just 7 days. The routine is clinically proven to help the baby fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. The JOHNSON’S® Baby Bedtime products are triple-tested by pediatricians, dermatologists and ophthalmologists.

Step 1: A warm bath with JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Bath and JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Bubble Bath can create a calming and relaxing bath time to help make falling asleep that much easier. These products are hypoallergenic and free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates & dyes, specifically designed for baby’s delicate skin.

Step 2: A massage with JOHNSON’S® Bedtime Baby Lotion is the perfect complement for this moment and the NATURALCALM® aromas helps soothe and relax the baby before bed.

Step 3: Quiet time activities such as reading, singing or listening to music allow the baby to unwind after a warm bath and a relaxing massage.

More examples of bedtime activities to include are:

Diaper or potty time

Putting on pajamas, a special sleeper or sleep sack

A feed—breast or bottle

Cuddles and kisses

Creating the right bedtime routine is such an important step in helping your little one drift off peacefully. Including these calming activities in your baby’s sleep plan could mean easier bedtimes and longer stretches of sleep throughout the night.

Interesting study out of England showing that parents experience sleep disruptions up to 6 years (6 years!!) after child birth. I misread this as 6 months the first time I glanced over the article because 6 years seems like a lifetime.

While this is true, it doesn’t have to be a reality. Healthy babies are totally capable of sleeping long consolidated stretches starting at 18 weeks of age.

My sleep was disrupted about 8 months total post-childbirth. While we chose to help our daughter learn independent sleep skills at 4.5 months old, I chose to night feed until she was 8 months old. But since this age, I’ve been roughly getting the same sleep I was prior to becoming a mama as our daughter sleeps from 7-7:30/8. This return to healthy sleep has been crucial in my overall mental and physical wellbeing.

So just because something is TRUE doesn’t mean it has to be a reality. I love this quote from Maya Angelou: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Science confirms what parents already know - an earlier bedtime not only makes for a happier, healthier child but also provides mental health benefits for parents, too. I definitely live for my coveted adult hours between 7-10PM.

My parenting style is largely what you could describe as “trial and error," in which I embrace flexibility and aim to find the methods that work best for my individual kids. But one thing I was never willing to budge on was bedtime and I have absolutely no regrets about it—especially considering ...

There really should be Starbucks!

I always get asked about early mornings wakings and how to get a baby/child to sleep in longer than the dreaded 5am.

Any time between 5-7am is a biologically normal time for a child to be waking. However, that doesn't mean that 5am has to be your family's rising time. Much of the early hours of the morning are purely behavioural, which is good news because it means you can deal with this "sleep issue" using a behavioural intervention.

Here are some quick tips to get your child's rising time to be later in the morning:

1) Decide what time is an acceptable time to rise in your home (keeping in mind that range of biologically normal wake times)

2) Consider anything before that time to be a night waking and deal with it accordingly. For example, if you decide that 6:30am is an acceptable rising time in your home, deal with anything before that as you would with any overnight waking. In our home, we take a modified interval approach but you can use whatever method/approach has worked for you historically.

3) Make sure your child is on a biologically-appropriate schedule, especially with regards to bedtime. On average, a child will float around a 7pm bedtime for a loooooong time (like well into school-aged years). So if your preschooler or toddler is going to bed well past that time, consider bumping it up to closer to 7pm. Getting into a deeper sleep in those early hours of the evening will help your child persist through the early hours of the morning when our drive to sleep isn't as strong.

4) Make sure your child's room is set up for sleep success. The most important factor here is the brightness as light in the early hours will stimulate your child's sleep/wake cycle to be up for the day. Make that room as dark as possible and, with time, you may notice a difference in their overall wake time for the day.

5) Consistency is Queen! I sound like a broken record but whatever you are showing your children is what they will come to learn. If you remain consistent in your approach in establishing the time that everyone is up for the day, your child will come to internalize that schedule and routine :)

I hope everyone is having a lovely Monday afternoon and was able to get some good rest on the weekend!

Mondays are tough 😴

How do you stay energized through the limited number of daylight hours? I probably don't have to tell you that as many as 90% of people are impacted by this changing season and the limited number of daylight. For me, I combat the winter blues with a combo of good old movement, music and feel good foods (did anyone say chocolate 🙋‍♀️).

Hey everyone! Sorry I've been a little absent. I was battling a nasty cold last week. I hope everyone has settled into the new time. It's taken a few days over at our house and we're all sleepier than usual. I'm going on a hiatus next week (to celebrate my sister's birthday) and I'll be back Tuesday Nov 20 from 8:30-9PM with my weekly online sleep clinic. Hope to see you there and, as always, wishing you a restful sleep!
