College of Nurses of Ontario

College of Nurses of Ontario As the governing body for Ontario's 180,000+ nurses, we register nurses, help them maintain competence, and set and enforce practice standards. Thank you.

We partner with employers, educators and government so that all Ontarians benefit from safe nursing care. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body for Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario, Canada. Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting safe nursing practice. CNO fulfils its role by:
*establishing requirements for entry to practice
*articulating and promoting practice standards
*administering its Quality Assurance Program
*enforcing standards of practice and conduct

CNO also supports the regulation of nursing in the public interest by:
*participating in the legislative process
*sharing statistical information about Ontario’s nurses

CNO works in partnership with employers, educators and government so that everyone in Ontario benefits from quality nursing services. CNO aims to prevent harm by identifying potential sources and addressing them before they can negatively impact the public. We are committed to a whole-system approach to nursing regulation and working with you to make a greater collective impact on the patient care system. Our social media policy

We commit to creating a safe environment both in our physical and digital spaces. We welcome disagreement, but comments must be respectful and relevant. Inappropriate comments, such as those that contain abusive or discriminatory language, profanity, or personal attacks will not be tolerated and will be removed. We are committed to treating you with respect; we ask that you are respectful on our platforms and when speaking with CNO staff.

Reconciliation does not happen in one day; it is an ongoing responsibility.

On the tenth anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliations Commission of Canada’s report, we honour the survivors of residential schools and the ongoing strength of Indigenous communities.

As the regulator for nursing in Ontario, we are committed to embedding cultural safety, cultural humility, and respect in our regulatory work. This means listening, reflecting, supporting and building regulatory frameworks in ways that honour ideas and perspectives from Indigenous Peoples and communities.

We invite you to read a message about our ongoing commitment to reconciliation from Silvie Crawford, Registrar & CEO, CNO: https://collegeofnurses.org/NDTR

Learning and listening are essential to reconciliation, deepening our understanding of the history and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples.

Organizations like the Indigenous Primary Health Care Council, the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres - OFIFC and the Ontario Native Women's Association (ONWA) offer educational resources on residential schools and other important topics.

Last week, CNO’s Council participated in a powerful learning session led by Dr. Nicole Blackman, RN, from the Indigenous Primary Health Care Council. The session focused on trauma and reconciliation in Indigenous communities—an important conversation for understanding how historical harms and cultural context shape health experiences.

As the governing body that sets direction for nursing regulation in Ontario, Council’s learning informs decisions that shape the future of safe, inclusive care. This experience deepens Council’s commitment to culturally safe care, which is an essential component of nursing standards and public protection.

Wearing an orange shirt on September 30 is one way to acknowledge the day, but solidarity can take many forms. Take time this month to reflect on how you can support Indigenous communities year-round, not just on September 30.

Keep watching to hear Nicole Blackman, RN, and Christi-Anne Poulette, RN, from the Indigenous Primary Health Care Council discuss what true reconciliation looks like.

Happy World Cleanup Day! Did you know CNO holds park cleanups at Ramsden Park? Our most recent effort resulted in nine bags of garbage/recycling, from cups and food wrappers to tennis ball containers.

A big shout-out to the staff members who organized and volunteered for this community initiative! We look forward to our next park cleanup day 🌱
