✨ 15 Tips to Help Make Homework & After-School Routines Easier for Kids ✨

Here are some parent-friendly strategies to help boost focus, build confidence, and reduce stress 👇

1️⃣ Start with the Easy Win!
Before tackling tricky homework, begin with a task your child feels confident doing. A successful start helps build momentum.

2️⃣ The Power of the 5-Minute Rule
Encourage your child to get started on a task by working for “just 5 minutes.” Often, starting is the hardest part of any task. Once your child begins, continuing with the work is more likely.

3️⃣ Time-Turner: Use a Visual Timer
Visual timers—like sand timers or apps—can help kids see how much time is left in a task. This technique can help reduce meltdowns, build independence, and support transitions.

4️⃣ Pomodoro, Kid-Style!
Try a 15-5-15 system: 15 minutes of focused work, 5-minute break—with movement, stretching or a snack—and then back to work. This method is great for building stamina and regulation.

5️⃣ Agenda = Superpower
Teach your child to use a daily agenda to track schoolwork, clubs, and special days. Colour-coding and stickers can make tasks more fun and engaging!

6️⃣ Get Set to Reset!
Build “reset breaks” into routines. Deep pressure—like hugs or squeezing a stress ball—movement, or a quiet space can help reduce sensory overload.

7️⃣ Backpack Buddy Check
Make a checklist for packing the school bag each night. Include items like homework, a water bottle, and headphones. Planning ahead can help ease transitions.

8️⃣ Fuel First, Then Focus
A protein-rich snack after school—like yogurt, nuts, cheese—can help your child regulate and support focus for homework or other activities.

9️⃣ Body Double for the Win!
Sit nearby—even working on your own task—while your child works. Your presence could help with focus and emotional regulation with fewer reminders to keep working!

🔟 Squeeze, Stretch, Succeed!
Before homework or handwriting, encourage a fine-motor warm-up. Squeezing putty, stretching arms, or doing wall push-ups can help prepare the body and mind for learning!

1️⃣1️⃣ Monday Morning Preview
On Sunday, preview the week ahead. For example, flag tests, gym days, and hot lunches to support planning and emotion regulation.

1️⃣2️⃣ Write Big Before Small
Struggling with handwriting? Start large! Use whiteboards or chalkboards vertically to build muscle memory and help with letter sizing.

1️⃣3️⃣ Feelings Check-In
Help your child identify and name feelings as tasks are unfolding. These check-ins can support emotional literacy and problem-solving.

1️⃣4️⃣ Sensory Toolkit On-the-Go
Pack a small “regulation kit” in your child’s knapsack. A fidget toy, chewy necklace, noise-canceling headphones, or hand lotion with a familiar scent and texture can provide comfort on-the-go!

1️⃣5️⃣ Celebrate the Small Stuff
Acknowledge effort, not just results. “You started your work without being asked—awesome job!” Praising effort can build confidence and intrinsic motivation.

💜 Remember: Small adjustments can create big wins for kids—and parents, too!).

Planning multiple meals per week is a tall order for most people, but especially for those living with ADHD. To help streamline the meal planning process, let’s take a look at what your body needs to function at its best. Aim for the following in each meal – complex carbohydrates, protein sources and plenty of fruit and / or vegetables. Use convenience foods, when necessary (this doesn’t have to mean a TV dinner or ultra processed foods) think about using bagged salads, frozen vegetables or fruit, canned beans and cut-up vegetables. All these ideas can reduce planning and prep time.

Here are some benefits and examples of each,

Complex carbohydrates – these are foods that contain fiber and help your body stabilize blood sugar, promote bowel health, help lower cholesterol levels, feed beneficial bacteria and reduce inflammation. Examples of complex carbohydrates includes whole grains such as whole grain breads, cereals and pasta, oatmeal, barley, brown rice, legumes (think beans, peas and lentils), ancient grains such as spelt, farro, millet and quinoa, as well as in fruit and vegetables.

Protein – protein sources are an important part of each meal because these foods provide the building blocks for all cells in our bodies. In addition, protein sources help to slow down digestion, stabilizing blood sugars and promoting better focus and concentration. Examples of protein sources include lean meats, eggs, fish, nuts / seeds, beans, lentils and tofu. Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt are also sources of protein.

Fruit / Vegetables – The more, the better. Choose a variety of colours to meet your vitamin and mineral needs and explore different tastes and textures.
