🕊️ Remembering Natalie 🕊️ | Five years ago today, Natalie, a close friend, tragically passed away from opioid poisoning, just steps from Heart2Heart CPR headquarters. We've since dedicated ourselves to educating our community and distributing naloxone kits, tackling the drug crisis through meaningful action and compassion. 🚑💔

In a moving video, we reflect on Natalie’s impact and our efforts, highlighted by a visit from our MP and Federal Minister Hon. Marci Ien, last year on the anniversary of Natalie's passing. I felt a deep need to bring her to the exact place where Natalie’s life ended. This was a time for deep reflection and the critical need for action.

Though I wish I could have helped Natalie, her story propels us to prevent further tragedies. Let's remind those struggling with substance use that they're not alone and to seek help. Support services through the National Overdose Response Service (1-888-688-NORS) and monitoring apps like Brave and Lifeguard can help save lives.

With over 42,000 Canadians lost to the toxic drug supply since 2016, let's honour their memory by fostering an environment where everyone feels supported to speak out and seek help. Stigma, shame and silence kills.

❗The Heart & Stroke 2024 Cardiac Arrest Report unveils urgent and startling insights that demand our attention. With 25 years of dedication to life-saving education, we are compelled to highlight these critical findings to you.

💔 Canada faces about 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually, with a mere 10% survival rate (1 in 10).

🚼 Almost half of these cases involve people younger than 65!

⌛ Survival rates decrease significantly with each passing minute without CPR or AED intervention.

🧠 Brain damage begins after 5 minutes without oxygen.

🚑 The rate of bystanders performing CPR in emergencies varies significantly, from 42% to 72%. However, public use of AEDs is notably low at just 13%, underscoring the critical need for greater accessibility to AEDs.

🏠 A substantial number of cardiac arrests occur at home, suggesting the importance of having AEDs readily available in both public and private settings.

👀 Very few Canadians, only 4%, know that a sudden collapse can often be caused by a cardiac arrest.

🤔 Also, 1 in 3 Canadians do not know the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack, and many don't realize that cardiac arrests outside the hospital are mostly fatal.

🔍 I urge you to explore the full Heart & Stroke 2024 report here: https://issuu.com/heartandstroke/docs/cardiac_arrest_report_feb_2024?fr=sYWQ2NjY0NDEzNjI

🏠 These findings represent not just statistics but a significant call to action and a sobering reality check. Getting trained and acquiring an AED for your home could be the most valuable investment you ever make.

🕊️ As the CEO of Heart to Heart, I want to share an experience that goes beyond just recounting a personal encounter; it's to ignite a conversation about compassion and the realities of homelessness. Today, on one of the coldest days of the year, I came across a scene that deeply affected me. As I walked, I noticed a person experiencing homelessness, sheltered inside a cardboard box on the sidewalk. Concerned, I approached him to ask if he was okay. His first response was a humble request for food. I gave him some money, but the conversation that followed truly broke my heart.

He shared with me, 'Shelters are full.' The desperation in his voice was striking. He believed he had no other option but to stay outside in that flimsy box, lacking adequate clothing and blankets.

This encounter, echoing with helplessness, took me back to 2016. That year, I had finally found my best friend of 18 years in Halifax, suffering from housing insecurity. Bringing him back to Toronto, I saw the severe, deep, and black frostbite covering most of his face. Tragically, he passed away eight months later due to other health issues.

Seeing this man today, I saw reflections of my best friend. It was a stark reminder that we are all flesh and blood, equal in so many fundamental ways.

I've decided to take action. Right now, I am returning to offer him a warm place for the night. Sharing this experience is my way of urging us all to recognize these situations as calls to action. After all, we must look out for each other, because in the end, our humanity is what truly defines us.

We are one of the top Red Cross First Aid CPR Training Partner's in Canada offering certification courses across Canada for 23 years.

🚀 Exciting News: Major Milestone! 🚀We're thrilled to announce that for the next four years, Heart to Heart CPR will serve as the City of Toronto’s official first aid training vendor for shelters and drop-in centres across the GTA!

💡 Since Oct 2020, amidst COVID-19 and record-high opioid-poisoning deaths, we've not only advocated for policy reform in training standards but also revamped shelter worker training with enhanced Basic Life Support skills, including specialized overdose response, extending far beyond basic first aid.

🌍 Our initiative became a free community program at the height of the pandemic, training and equipping over 250 at-risk community members and frontline workers in advanced overdose response. We also provided everyone with a free emergency backpack filled with essentials items like 4-piece PPE, a first aid kit, and vital Bag-Valve Mask.

🌹 This program was driven by The Johnston-Brais Initiative, formed in memory of our CEO's late friends Garth Johnston and Natalie Brais, who faced battles with HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and drug poisoning. Their stories and struggles have profoundly inspired our mission.

🤝This collaboration with the City of Toronto is a celebration of our dedication to creating safer, healthier communities and workplaces. Join us in marking this significant step in our journey from influencing policy reform to becoming the official first aid training provider for the City of Toronto's shelter system.🏆
