Over the holidays, when volunteer shifts are often hardest to fill, the Modern Mystery School staff and local community members tied on their aprons and stepped in to serve meals at Haven Toronto.

Haven Toronto is a drop-in centre serving homeless and marginally housed men over 50—providing breakfast and lunch every single day of the year. More than meals, Haven offers warmth, dignity, connection, and vital services to those who need it most.

What seemed like a simple act of service became a deeply meaningful experience for everyone involved.

For many years, the Modern Mystery School has proudly supported Haven Toronto.

This season, that support included a $20,000 donation from Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave Lanyon and Ipsissima Franca Lanyon, 200 hoodies for Haven members, winter essentials such as hats, scarves, gloves, boots and even snow pants and winter jackets — all collected from our HQ staff and local initiate community — plus over 150 gift cards to help meet immediate needs.

We are honoured to stand alongside Haven Toronto in their mission to care for our elders, strengthen community, and bring warmth during the coldest months every day of the year.

A community walking challenge with Modern Mystery School

We’re inviting you to walk with us — literally.
From midnight to midnight, we’re taking on 50,000 steps in one day together.

Not to rush.
Not to compete.
But to move, connect, and walk — step by step.

• When: Sunday, January 11th
Midnight → Midnight (24 hours)
• Goal: 50,000 steps total
• How: Walk throughout the day in whatever way works for you
• Where: Anywhere in the world 🌍

• Track your steps on your phone or watch

For the past several years, the Modern Mystery School has proudly supported Haven Toronto, a vital drop-in centre dedicated to elder homeless, marginally housed, and socially isolated men.

Haven Toronto provides a safe and welcoming space where men can enjoy a hot meal, take a warm shower, receive clean clothing, and access essential services such as dental care, barbering, social services, and more. Most importantly, Haven fosters dignity, connection, and a sense of community for those who need it most.

This year, Sovereign Ipsissimus Dave and Ipsissima Franca donated $20,000 to Haven Toronto, along with 200 hoodies for its members. In addition, the Modern Mystery School HQ staff and local initiate community came together to contribute much-needed winter essentials, including hats, gloves, boots, neck warmers, socks, underwear, snow pants, hand warmers, and winter coats — and over 150 gift cards!

Through these collective efforts, we are honoured to support Haven Toronto’s mission of providing warmth, care, and community during the colder months—and beyond.

On Friday evening, we gathered to honour L the turning of the Wheel.

Today marks the Winter Solstice — Yule — the longest and darkest night of the year, we came together in ceremony and community at the Modern Mystery School headquarters in Toronto.

Yule marks the rebirth of the Sun.
Though the night is long, from this moment forward the light slowly begins to return.

This time of year can stir many things — reflection, heaviness, tenderness, or the quiet sense that something old is ready to be released. It is an invitation to go inward, to meet what has been held in the dark, and to allow it to soften in grace.

Traditionally, Yule is honoured with candlelight, fire, warmth, stillness, prayer, and intention — symbols of hope carried through the longest night. One flame lit in the darkness, reminding us that light is never truly gone.

We gather not to rush the return of the light, but to witness it.
To release what has finished its work.
To make space for renewal.

As the Wheel turns once more, we ask:
What is ready to be released… and what light is asking to be reborn within you? 🕯️✨
