Healing deepens when multiple ways of knowing are honoured.

At EHN Edgewood Nanaimo, recovery is shaped by both Indigenous traditions and Western clinical care. This approach is rooted in ceremony, culture, lived experience, and respect. Our Indigenous Healing Program exists because Indigenous patients, families, and communities asked for care that feels safe, culturally grounded, and whole.

When these perspectives come together, people are supported in ways that truly resonate and last.

It takes motivation to move your body when your mind feels heavy.

It takes intention to choose fresh air over shutting down.

And it takes real effort to do the simple things that support your healing.

If that was your win today, we see you.

Alcohol misuse is often misunderstood. For people living with ADHD, research shows a clear and consistent pattern.

Alcohol can hit differently because ADHD affects how the brain regulates impulse, emotion, and stimulation. Alcohol often becomes a way to quiet restlessness, ease emotional intensity, or slow an overwhelmed nervous system.

Research shows a strong link between ADHD and alcohol use disorder. Alcohol use often begins earlier, moves more quickly from use to misuse, and is more likely to become severe and long-lasting.
When ADHD goes unrecognized or unsupported, alcohol can shift from something social to something functional. It becomes a coping strategy rather than a choice.

Understanding this connection changes how care is delivered. When ADHD and alcohol use disorder are treated together, people have a stronger foundation for recovery.

Self-trust is built through action.

It is noticing what you feel, taking it seriously, and listening to your body. It is making decisions that align with your values, even when they feel uncomfortable.

In recovery, self-trust grows when you show up consistently,
when you follow through on commitments to yourself, and
when you acknowledge your limits and respect them.

Self-trust means recognizing that your needs are valid.
It means choosing honesty in your thoughts, your relationships, and your actions.

Sue Daw, Executive Chef and Kitchen Manager at EHN Red Deer Recovery Community, believes that recovery is built through belonging, dignity, and shared moments of care.

Every day, she creates meals and experiences that bring people together, especially during times of the year that can feel heavy or isolating. As part of the social committee, Sue focuses on fostering connection and inclusion for both residents and staff.

What makes Sue’s work so meaningful is the intention behind it. From organizing the 12 Days of Christmas with global cuisines and cultural activities to creating thoughtful holiday and New Year’s celebrations, she helps ensure residents feel valued, welcomed, and seen.

At EHN Edgewood Nanaimo, we meet people exactly where they are, even when they’re not feeling worthy of help.

Some arrive for their family. Some come because work encouraged them. Some show up even though a part of them still thinks they “should” be able to handle it alone.

That first step doesn’t have to be confident or certain.
It doesn’t even have to feel deserved. It just has to happen.

With time, support, and care, something changes. People begin to see their struggle for what it is. Not a personal failure, but an illness that deserves treatment.

We’re seeing more cannabis-related emergency room visits in Canada, and the reasons are often misunderstood.

Many of these visits are linked to panic attacks, sudden anxiety surges, paranoia, and psychosis-like reactions. These experiences are more common among people with existing anxiety, trauma, or other mental health vulnerabilities.

This doesn’t make cannabis harmful or helpful across the board, but it does highlight how differently mental health and coping tools can affect people.

If you or a loved one needs help with cannabis use, learn more about getting help at the link our link below.

Across Canada, research continues to point to clear patterns in how Black communities experience mental health and addiction care. Higher levels of distress. Longer waits for support. Greater likelihood of being monitored rather than helped. Trauma that goes unrecognized because the right questions were never asked.

Mistrust of health systems did not appear out of nowhere. It was shaped by lived experience, history, and repeated encounters with systems that were not built with Black people in mind.

When care is culturally safe, when representation is present, and when context is understood, outcomes improve.

EHN Canada

EHN Canada mental health and addiction treatment centres are the largest and most experienced network of adult inpatient & outpatient treatment services in Canada.

Why is this important? Working together we build hope, inspiration and community based on a proven path to recovery. This expansive system allows us to offer treatments for drug, alcohol, sexual compulsion, problem gambling, and eating disorders.

Our core belief is that recovery and quality of life are possible for those in our care. Collaboration, courage and compassion set the tone for the care we provide. We always engage our patients with the respect and honesty they deserve, through every step of their journey towards recovery.

At EHN Canada, no two patients are exactly the same, and our philosophy of care recognizes this. Our treatment plans are designed to set patients and clients on their own individual journeys to recovery. We know that addiction and mental illness thrive in isolation, which is why we create safe, honest, and trusting therapeutic communities for our patients, clients, and families to share in the healing process. This is why we provide ongoing, open-ended support, for as long as you need it. We call it our continuum of care – but more on that later.
