We are a community of all ages who aim to live more healthy, joyful, integrated lives through yoga, Waterhouse.
• I was a competitive bodybuilder, triathlete.
In my experience of making Yoga and exercise a daily way of life I have seen that this commitment has carried over into a more deeply felt initiative under all that I do. In other words, if you develop the commitment to exercise or move daily you learn to rely on your self. This means I have a greater sense of trust to do what I am truly inspired to do in the way I need to. My wish is to demonstra
te how we come into our true humanity when we unite with this innate intelligence and use our current circumstances, easy or challenging, as a doorway into a deeper understanding of our true nature. By returning to this intelligence, we will enliven the possibilities of human physical potential and inspire compassionately, the groundwork for personal renewal. You will learn how to:
• put your body first in a gentle, responsive way
• develop the commitment to exercise or practice Yoga conistently
• eat more healthily
• recognize both healthy and shadow aspects of your self, and an understanding of how to work with them.
• Understand how to change (lifelong) habits so that you can trust your self to focus and realistically meet your needs
• Recognize that your body/mind/circumstances will support you as you continue to make the changes you need
• Recognize that living the healthiest expression of who we are extends beyond our own lives and benefits our families, communities, and all life on earth. In order to help you integrate exercise and Yoga into your life I offer:
• small intimate classes where I adjust your body in the poses
• offer useful insights for this time to assist conscious living
• my open hearted, informative teaching style will call on you to think for yourself and make requests ( “Can you show me how to do this pose so it doesn’t hurt my knee?”)
In order to help you stay inspired to exercise and practice Yoga I offer private sessions:
• to identify your body’s needs and create a real life plan that fits your schedule and exercise personality
• aimed at developing awareness to work with your body responsively
• to increase mobility, flexibility and stamina which are the most fundamental components of fitness that make consistency possible
• aimed at rehabilitation after surgery, accidents or cancer
• aimed at feeling whole and more resilient after life shifts and the need to adapt to the changes with self-empathy and self-care
Experience is the best teacher:
• I have worked in the fitness and rehab industry for 32 years with athletes, those looking to get flexible or feel better in their bodies, accident survivors and those with emotional trauma; as well as corporate wellness, clinical settings, and contract work with organizations such as The Ontario Fitness Council, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto District School Board, Bell Canada, Canada Life, T.D. The following life experiences have informed my teaching and inspired my life:
• Single mom starting from my daughter’s birth
• Running my fitness business and Yoga studio all my life
• Living with teachers and energy workers from all parts of the world
• Studying Ashtanga Yoga and with David Swenson
• My father’s entrepreneurial drive and spirit
• The teacher’s I have had an extensive teaching from either in person or through personal study: Krishnamurti, Osho, Byron Katie, Barbara Marx Hubbard, my daughter Sarah, Marshall Rosenberg, John Bradshaw, Philip Shepherd, Dr. David R. Hawkins, Sri Aurobindo, Satprem, and the ever popular Calvin and Hobbes.
• Living with cellular violation (PTSD) and re-discovering the way of personal renewal

Have you ever felt like the world is too much? Do you feel constantly anxious about individual and societal pressures? That might be a better sign than you think. In this documentary we explore anxiety as a cultural epidemic. Understanding anxiety as a part of living in a sick and disconnected society means we can interpret it as a healthy sign. The anxiety show us the humanity of our needs in a society that thrives without them. How do we function and how can we function in this anxious culture? That’s what we wanted to find out.
Follow Celeste Shirley as she uncovers the mysteries behind anxiety in a documentary full of rich insights and experiences. 100% handmade and carefully thought out, anxiety culture has the heart of many. And now it’s finally ready to release. We would love for you to see first-hand all the hard work, we put into it.
Anxiety Culture will be debuted Saturday February 8th at the Yoga House, we would love to have you here!

The Yoga House began in Parkdale (Toronto) in 1998. It started as a paint job. I took all my furniture out of my living room. I hired a local painter/artist, Linden Andrews. We drank latte’s and I learned how to faux paint giraffe spots into a terra cotta surface on the three walls. We painted a mural of Matisse’s DANCE (naked dancing women--you know the one!) on the fourth. At the end of 5 days, and many miraculous events (keeping in mind miracles are normal--a local member of parliament called and booked me for a years worth of private sessions while I was painting the “Fortunate Blessings” corner, from the Feng Shui bagua) we sat on the floor smiling up at our work.
I loved looking a Matisse’s dancing women so much, and the new walls and THE SPACE(!!!) that I couldn’t put the furniture back. I was worried about where my parents would sit, and other normal people, when they visited. I sensed that I really ought to put back the couches end tables and lamps. I managed to rid myself of these ridiculous thoughts as they weren’t mine! We got a whole bunch of old pillows (okay, they were retrieved on garbage day at the curb side boutique). My friend came over with her sewing machine. I got a whole bunch of blue fabric and she made a gazillion pillow covers, or maybe it was twenty-two.
Sarah and I (my daughter, who was seven) danced around the joint and ate our dinner on the floor in front of the roaring fireplace. We did way more art and had way more kids over. When parents picked up their kidlets and saw the new playground living room, I kept hearing, “Celeste, are you running Kid’s Yoga now?” That was my cue.
I’ll leave out all the gory details as to how I ended up in the East End and bought a gorgeous property on a conservation area and built The Yoga House. (If only because I want to forget contractors, zoning inspectors, lawyers, racoons, permits, and how to orchestrate the floor installers coming AFTER the drywall dudes.) (Oh, and the money.)
Now, I live the fabulous, and exhausting life of running a yoga studio in nature with a view.
Everyone who has come, “gets it”. Each class feels like we are coming to do one thing. To feel good. We feel good. Is it because we laugh so much. Is it because birds have flown in? Is it because we eat chocolate? Is it because we learn so much from each other? It’s because of community. It’s because we know how important our life is.
If you would like to read more, (dear gawd, I can be ever so clear about all I want to say!) then please go fetch a tea and read more. If you’re still here, below is my happy rant about all I love to relay here in my special studio, The Yoga House. I am really proud of building the first residentially zoned yoga studio that set a precedence for zoning in the City of Toronto. I’m really happy that I get to bring people to nature every single day. I’m really happy they come.
