Meet Adam Szwed, our Clinical Director & Physiotherapist at SEMI!

Adam completed both his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts (Honors Specialization) in Kinesiology and Master of Physiotherapy at Western University. As Clinical Director at SEMI, he brings a passion for learning and mentoring young therapists and fostering team growth and skill development. His background in junior hockey and competitive soccer, along with overcoming his own injuries, inspired his career in physiotherapy, where he helps clients of all ages achieve their health and wellness goals through a combination of manual therapy, corrective exercises, and education.

Adam holds Level 1 and Level 2 certifications in manual therapy. Outside of the clinic, he stays active with hiking, running, and training in CrossFit. He is currently preparing for the Sporting Life 10K in May, aiming to beat his previous time of 45:20 while maintaining his CrossFit training. www.semisportmed.com

We are looking to grow our multi-disciplinary Sports Medicine team at SEMI (Sports & Exercise Medicine Institute) in North York with a chiropractor who is motivated, patient-centred and passionate about positively impacting patients and helping them return to the activities they enjoy the most. You will be joining a team of Sports Medicine and Orthopedic physicians, experienced Physiotherapists, Registered Massage Therapists, Osteopaths and Chiropodists.

SEMI is one of Toronto’s premier sport medicine clinics proudly serving patients in the GTA for over 25 years. We are conveniently located at Yonge & Sheppard with direct access to the TTC and just off Hwy 401.

Schedule:
· 2 to 3 days a week (Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) with the opportunity to grow to full time.
· No weekends

Salary:
· 50% - 55% fee split dependent on experience.

What you need to be successful:
· Registration in good standing with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario
· At least 2–3 years of clinical experience.
· Experience treating clients with sport injuries
· Passion for your profession and commitment to ongoing professional development.
· Dedication to providing the highest quality of client care in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
· Strong skills in critical thinking, decision-making and analysis.
· Excellent time management and organizational skills with an ability to work independently.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills

There are many steps in preparing platelet rich plasma (PRP). In this photo, Karen, our nurse, is preparing injections for a patient with osteoarthritis, in this case, a “booster” injection two weeks after her initial Fat Transfer + PRP injections. Following the procedure, which is done using ultrasound guidance, Dr. Armstrong will apply a bandaid and the patient will carry on with life as usual and without downtime. Results take weeks to months but approximately 80% of patients experience significant relief. In this video clip, sports medicine physician, Dr. Wes Armstrong is performing a Fat Transfer + PRP injection in a patient with osteoarthritis in her knees. About 80% of our patients with osteoarthritis benefit from this procedure with many patients being able to delay or forgo joint replacement surgery. There is very little if any downtime following the procedure, physical therapy can begin within a day or two, and patients usually begin to notice a reduction in pain and increased mobility within a few weeks. Two weeks after the injection, patients return for a top-up PRP injection, and we see them again about six weeks after that, to evaluate their progress. If you would like to consult with our medical team about this procedure, no referral is necessary and you can simply call to book a consultation. Consultations are covered by a valid OHIP card. A very warm welcome to Dr. Wesley Armstrong who has recently joined our team. Dr. Armstrong is a Sports and Emergency Medicine Physician and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Medical Sciences from Western University and earned his medical degree from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, USA. After returning to Canada, Dr. Armstrong completed a 5-year residency in Academic Emergency Medicine and a Fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Armstrong is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at both McMaster University and Toronto Metropolitan University and is a member of the Canadian Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine. With advanced training in ultrasound-guided injection therapies, he is passionate about helping athletes return to the sports they love. Outside of his professional work, Dr. Armstrong enjoys skiing, golfing, and playing hockey.

A very warm welcome to another new team member! Dr. Sofia Solar Cafaggi is a family physician with specialty training in Sport and Exercise Medicine, and an avid sports enthusiast. She completed medical school and family medicine residency at the University of Toronto, and then pursued a fellowship in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Alberta. She has been involved with multiple sporting organizations at the local, varsity, and professional levels in both Toronto and Edmonton. She has a special interest in regenerative medicine and ultrasound-guided procedures. Prior to her medical career, Dr. Solar Cafaggi worked as a management consultant in the healthcare space. She holds an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from McGill University and a master’s degree in Translational Medicine/Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
