MIYA Creative Care

MIYA Creative Care Miya Creative Care partners with health organizations in Ontario to integrate Creative Arts Therapies

Miya Music Therapy provides clinical music therapy to individuals of all ages and abilities. The overall goal is to improve client’s quality of life through creative and empowering music therapy interventions. We always begin with assessment sessions wherein a careplan is developed to best meet each client’s unique needs. Relationships with our clients are based on respect, dignity and collaboration. We abide by the ethical principles set out in the Canadian Association for Music Therapy. By building strong partnerships within the community, we aim to bring services to those who can benefit from integrating music therapy into their care. Community partnerships include those with long-term care facilities, group homes, retirement homes, assisted living facilities, hospices, rehabilitation centres, mental health centres, schools and therapy centres. We also work with families to help bring music therapy to their loved ones in the comfort of their home. Miya Music Therapy aims to create more public awareness on the benefits of music therapy. We hope that by doing this, more people will have access to these services and benefit from working with an accredited music therapist. Hannah is currently studying at Wilfrid Laurier University and has been working with us in dementia care and with adults with disabilities. From day one, she’s brought curiosity, warmth, and genuine care into every session—and it’s already such a joy to support her learning!

My heart is feeling very full today!

Today was one of those "milestone" moments for me and for the Creative Care Club! We hosted our weekly Think Tank meeting where members join virtually to share ideas, celebrate wins, ask questions, and support one another in program planning!

Getting together with members today was everything I envisioned when I started making this app (with absoloutely no prior idea on how to go about building an app 😂)!

One member shared how she used our Virtual Arts: Wisdom Wall program with a resident and how proud this resident was to not only create something that can be shared with others, but also to express her lifelong values and wisdom in a way that made her feel truly seen by her community.

Another Recreation Therapist member of the Creative Care Club shared how she used our Learning & Discovery: Amazing Architecture program and how residents responded that they felt a renewed sense of curiosity, sparking a 40-minute spontaneous discussion about homes and buildings they grew up surrounded by.

We brainstormed on how to adapt the 1:1 Connection Guide - Musical Autobiography for a resident who is non-speaking, ensuring every individual has a voice, regardless of their physical or cognitive barriers.

Another member brought a brilliant suggestion for our Community Page to help us share ideas even faster.

This is what the Creative Care Club is all about! It’s more than an app; it’s a community that gives care professionals the confidence to facilitate creative programs and the support to prevent burnout.

Seeing it come together to improve the quality of life for aging adults—and those who care for them - it feels like an important moment to pause and be grateful that this is coming to fruition!

To our members: Thank you for your heart and your creativity. We are just getting started! 🎨🎶

This is an opportunity for us to get together as a community, look through the monthly resources, bounce ideas on how to adapt programs and one-to-one guides for residents with varying needs and cheer each other on!

Can't wait to see you there!

Music Habits That Support Mental Health (Part 1 of 5) As we lead up to the holidays, I’d l ike to share a 5-part series for caregivers, clinicians, professionals, parents, and anyone navigating an emotionally complex season.

The holidays can bring a mix of joy, nostalgia, stress, grief, noise, and overwhelm — sometimes all at once.

Here is the first Music Habit you can use to support your mental health: 🎧Part 1/5: The 3-Song Reset:

A short playlist you can use to regulate your mood when you need it most.

1️⃣ Start with a matching song Begin with something familiar that meets you exactly where you are. If your mood is high stress, your matching song might have a quicker tempo or lyrics that acknowledge tension or overwhelm. This step works because the nervous system responds best when it feels “seen” rather than pushed to feel differently.

2️⃣ Move into a transition song Shift into something gently uplifting, moderate tempo, steady rhythm, hopeful tone. This song acts as a bridge between your current state and the one you want to reach.

3️⃣ End with an energizing or calm track Finally, choose a song that brings a sense of grounding, calmness, or renewed energy - depending on the mood you are hoping to achieve. This helps the body move into a regulated state, supporting focus, emotional balance, and a feeling of being “reset.”

Three songs — about 10–12 minutes — is often enough time for the body to adjust breathing, heart rate, and cognitive focus. And most importantly: choose songs you genuinely love and enjoy. Your emotional connection to the music is what makes this practice effective!

What three songs help you move from tense → calm?! I’d love to hear your favourites below!
