Kensington Midwives have a broader commitment to social justice. We recognize that discrimination and systemic marginalization of people based on, but not exclusive to, ability, age, class, economic status, educational background, ethnicity, gender, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, and reproductive and parenting decisions, perpetuates social inequities. We try to foster an equitable,

anti-oppressive environment that is welcoming, safe, accessible and inclusive to all of our clients and midwives.

We know most people don't have a pool as a cooling accessory, but most public pools in Toronto are now open. Check the website for more info.

To enjoy your pregnancy summer, we recommend:

1. Breathable clothing & comfy sandals: you don't have to buy pregnancy clothes necessarily, sometimes a summer dress might do the trick.
2. Rest breaks.
3. Cooling accessories: handheld fan (you might find it at Dollarama) but a cold cloth might help just the same.
4. Air quality check for smoke or humidity days: remember that you can set up alerts on your preferred weather app to get those automatically.
5. Hydration station: always have a water bottle or water available near you.

Do you have any other tips for not only surviving but enjoying summer while pregnant? Let us know below.

Midwifery care is all about community and providing high level of pregnancy care and support for this community. This is why we are so thankful when our clients share their experience and photo with us. This is why we have an annual picnic in the fall as well.

Our client Sagarika was so kind to send this photo and allow us to post it. Thank you!!

Midwives have been fully funded and regulated as part of the Ontario health care system since 1994. The profession of midwifery in Ontario is self-regulated and governed by The College of Midwives of Ontario (CMO) which licences midwives and ensures the ongoing quality and safety of midwifery care. Midwifery practice is governed by legislation that sets out the provisions for many health care professionals in Ontario. All midwives must be registered with the CMO to practice in Ontario. The Association of Ontario Midwives (AOM) is the professional organization representing the practice of midwifery and midwives. All of the midwives at Kensington Midwives are members of the AOM and of the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM).

Becoming a registered midwife in Ontario requires completing a four-year university degree through the Ontario Midwifery Education Program. If a midwife has been trained outside of Canada, they complete the International Midwifery Pre-Registration Program. Aboriginal Midwives may obtain training through the four-year Aboriginal Midwifery Training Program at Tsi Non:we Ionnakeratstha Ona:grahsta' Maternal and Child Centre on Six Nations of the Grand River territory.

Our clinic has a supportive environment for all our clients, midwives/staff and everyone should feel welcomed. From our Association Ontario Midwives :

Pride is a time to honor the history, resilience and diversity of the two-spirit, le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r and intersex (2SLGBTQI+) communities. It is a month dedicated to celebrating the courage of those who have fought for equality, safety and recognition, while also acknowledging the ongoing struggles many continue to face. Providing safe, affirming, inclusive and equitable care to all, including 2SLGBTQI+ clients, is a core tenant of the compassionate, respectful and dignified care provided by midwives across Ontario.

In recognizing the importance of fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for both 2SLGBTQI+ clients and midwifery professionals, the AOM remains committed to gender inclusivity and human rights, diversity and equity, and supporting midwives with upholding and learning more about these commitments. Check out AOM webinars on Infusing Intentionality & Care: Centering Sexual, Romantic & Gender Diversity, Addressing Systems of Oppression Against 2SLGBTQI+ and Intersectional Communities and resources for Midwives with 2SLGBTQQIA+ Clients.
