Winter weather can make outdoor activity harder for older adults, but staying active is important for strength, balance, mobility and mood. There are many safe, low-impact ways to move indoors and keep your body healthy.

đź’Ş Gentle options include chair yoga to improve flexibility and balance, indoor walking in hallways or community spaces, and resistance band strength exercises to support muscle and bone health.
đź’Ş If you have access to an indoor pool, water aerobics can provide joint-friendly exercise.
đź’Ş Daily stretching and simple activities like dancing or walking in place can also help keep you moving throughout the winter.

When members of our community are struggling with issues that impact their ability to live independently, non-judgmental and compassionate support from members of our Responsive Community Care team, like Kyra, can go a long way.

As a Mental Health Case Worker, she assists clients in creating and manifesting harm-reduction treatment plans and guides them through complex social systems with the goal of achieving overall independence. She works to connect clients with meaningful resources and supports so they can thrive beyond their time with her direct involvement.

“It might sound like a cliché,” says Kyra. “But it’s the people who make this work so fulfilling. Watching clients succeed and being able to witness their progress is incredibly rewarding.”

Thanks to skilled and understanding professionals like Kyra, clients of VHA’s Responsive Community Care improve their wellbeing and ability to live independently. Learn more about VHA’s Responsive Community Care here: https://www.vha.ca/integrated-solutions/responsive-community-care/

As we step into a new year, we begin the next chapter of VHA Home HealthCare’s second century with gratitude, pride and a continuing dedication to providing excellent care, delivered with heart and led by science.

For more than 100 years, VHA has supported Ontarians in living safely and independently at home. What started in 1925 with a small group of homemakers has grown into a provincewide team of more than 3,000 care professionals.

Throughout our history, we have continually evolved to meet the changing needs of clients and families. From expanding our services to introducing new roles in home care, to developing innovative models and partnerships that improve hospital-to-home transitions, our focus has always been on strengthening care where people need it most.

Entering this new year, we look ahead with optimism. We remain committed to advancing care science, deepening collaboration with partners and clients, and shaping a future where home and community care is more connected, more accessible and more responsive than ever.

Thank you to our teams, partners, clients and families for being part of this century-long journey. Together, we move forward with purpose.

Meet Susan. She’s been volunteering with VHA’s Safer Spaces Hoarding Support Program for a little more than a year now. Susan initially decided to get involved as a way to give back to her community and utilize her “teacher skills” in a different way.

In her role as a volunteer, she works with clients and builds a one-on-one relationship as they navigate decluttering, organizing and creating a safer living environment for themselves.

In her time as a volunteer, she’s had the opportunity to meet some incredible people and make lasting memories. One of her favourite memories is helping a client with an electric wheelchair create a living environment where they had more room to maneuver their chair.

For people who are considering volunteering with VHA, Susan’s advice is simple. “Go for it! You’ll learn so much about your community and meet people who really appreciate you.”
