Recognizing the extreme need for services, Dialectical Living was formed to provide Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills and support to those in need. We would like to reduce the needless suffering for many by offering more options to acquire skills learning and support with trained peers. Our mission is to enable those who struggle with emotion regulation and their families and friends a better quality of life; as Marsha Linehan says “a life worth living”. handsheartWe are a group of individuals who are passionate about helping others and teaching and using DBT skills. Each of us have lived experience and have been touched by emotion dysregulation either ourselves and/or have lived or worked with others who struggle. We are social workers, psychologists, nurses, teachers, doctors, and peer workers professionally who have struggled and who are leading successful lives using DBT skills and who feel so strongly about the skills working want to give back to the community to help bring others out of the dark hole into happier more fulfilling lives. We hope to exceed your expectations with quality learning and supportive discussions.

Validation doesn’t mean you’re saying someone is right.

It means you’re saying, “Your feelings make sense, given what you’ve been through.”

It’s the difference between:
❌ “You did the right thing.”
✅ “I understand why that felt like your only option.”

🧠 In DBT, we teach validation as a way to connect, de-escalate conflict, and build trust, even in hard conversations.

Try saying:
— “That sounds so tough.”
— “I can see why you’d feel that way.”
— “Thanks for telling me that.”

🛑 Stop: Pause, no reacting yet.
🧍🏽 Take a step back: Ground yourself.
👁 Observe: What am I noticing in my body and thoughts?
🧭 Proceed mindfully: What’s the skillful next step here?

💬 DBT TIP TUESDAY: Check the Facts

Sometimes our emotions explode — not because the situation is extreme, but because our interpretation of it is. That’s where “Check the Facts” comes in.

🧠 Here’s how it works:
When you feel a strong emotion, ask yourself:
* What are the actual facts of this situation?
* Could there be another explanation?
* Am I jumping to conclusions?

💡 Example:
I made a mistake at work — I’m going to get fired.
1. Check the facts:
* It was a small error, and you owned up to it.
* Your boss didn’t mention any consequences.
* You’ve had positive feedback all month.

🧘 Result: Less panic, more perspective. You can problem-solve instead of spiraling.
