Let’s talk about transfer tools.

A sliding board (or transfer board) helps to bridge the gap between two surfaces. The individual can make smaller gradual movements to slide across instead of one large movement that may cause instability. This allows for more independence when transferring to and from mobility devices.

Exercises don’t always need to be complicated or intense to be effective.

Arthur and Rebecca are working on maintaining posture and core engagement while performing reaching tasks. While also trying to lessen compensatory movements to encourage better movement patterns and increase range of motion.

Arthur wants to be able help more with household tasks so they’ve been incorporating some into their exercises as well.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

Parkinson’s is a chronic, degenerative neurological condition caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. It is commonly characterized by motor symptoms, such as slowness of movement, tremor, rigidity and impaired balance, which affects a person’s movement and balance. Additional symptoms can include fatigue, speech and writing difficulties, sleep disorders, loss of smell, depression, and cognitive changes.

There are medications that can help reduce the effect of symptoms in daily life. A targeted exercise routine can also help manage the progression. Such as strength, mobility, coordination, and balance work can assist with activities of daily living and fall prevention. We can help with that!

Parkinson Canada has a ton of valuable resources available on their website for those living with Parkinson’s as well as their loved ones and caregivers. They also offer peer support programs!

It’s World Health Day!

This year’s theme is “Stand with Science”. What does that mean exactly?

Science delivers results when collaboration turns knowledge into action. Health decisions must be
guided by evidence, not noise.

Turn to trusted, science-based sources to:
• protect your health
• prevent disease
• seek treatment and recovery

What is this setup for?

We use this setup to maintain positioning for performing exercises in quadruped. For those with paralysis, using straps, blocks, bolsters, and foam rollers allows us to maintain proper positioning for safety. It also lets us keep our hands free so we can support our clients in multiple positions. Safety, support, and positioning during exercises is important to prevent possible injuries, especially for those who have little or no sensation.
