Jessy Alam RP, M.Ed, CCC - Counselling & Psychotherapy Creating dialogue about mental health beyond the counselling room Welcome! I am available for sessions both in-person or via video conferencing such as Skype.

Check in for encouraging words, life challenges, and to share your thoughts about issues that we all dwell on from time to time! Different seasons in life call for us to build different mental and emotional "muscles" to face difficulties, overcome challenges and simply learn how to love and enjoy what we have as well as how to enjoy those that we share it with.

For many, the term ‘therapy’ has become an intimidating concept that exists in formal, rigid and impersonal spaces. Trained mental health professionals have tirelessly contributed to the mental and emotional well being of individuals and families but the essence of therapy does not end there. In fact, deep and lasting therapy takes place when the space outside of the counselling room is a complimenting force in healing. I would like to use this forum to invite a unique dialogue among individuals, groups and communities where we can explore the potential of therapy as it exists outside of the formal therapy session. I believe in actively taking part in the creation of an engaged community where the true meaning of healing exists in a personal, tangible and textured reality. This page serves as a space for discussion, a resource hub for community events and relevant developments in areas of mental health, cultural awareness, community engagement and development.

Personal Background

For over 13 years, I have dedicated myself to the field of mental health and social services. I have done so by working with diverse communities across the Greater Toronto Area to promote mental health services, advocacy and outreach events. I had the privilege of partnering with organizations such as the United Way and provided skill-building workshops, motivational speaking and conferences in efforts to impart knowledge, raise awareness about mental health and to engage community members in meaningful dialogue about cultural issues. For over 5 years years, I volunteered for community organizations such as the North York Women’s Centre as a women’s group facilitator and I also served as a Community Resource Team member at Oolagen Family Services. I have clinical training in Counselling Psychology from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. I am a Professional Member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and I am registered for independent practice with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)

Currently, I provide assessment and psychotherapy services in English, Arabic and French. In wellness,

More from The Body Keeps The Score:

"Being traumatized is not just an issue of being stuck in the past; it is just as much a problem of not being fully alive in the present."

-Bessel Van Der Kolk

NOT being "fully alive in the present" can look different for everyone.

Where are you not fully alive?

10/06/2020

"Nobody can “treat” a war, or abuse, r**e, molestation, or any other horrendous event, for that matter; what has happened cannot be undone.

But what can be dealt with are the imprints of the trauma on body, mind, and soul: the crushing sensations in your chest that you may label as anxiety or depression; the fear of losing control; always being on alert for danger or rejection; the self-loathing; the nightmares and flashbacks; the fog that keeps you from staying on task and from engaging fully in what you are doing; being unable to fully open your heart to another human being."

Bessel Van Der Kolk
The Body Keeps the Score

Notice he says "dealt with" not "cured". Because the body doesn't work that way. We can't erase it we can learn to deal with it.
