Why Should Diabetic Patients See Their Optometrist Regularly?
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of legal blindness in working-age adults. Diabetes, Type 1 or Type 2, can cause various eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, which is bleeding in the back of the eye. The early stages of eye disease often occur without any symptoms. People with diabetes must undergo yearly eye examinations with their Optometrist to detect any changes early. If left untreated, diabetic eye disease can lead to blindness. However, when caught early, diabetic eye disease can be treated to prevent further damage. The risk of sight loss can also be reduced by maintaining glucose levels within the target range. High or fluctuating blood sugars can damage blood vessels all over the body, including those that supply the retina. Routine eye examinations for individuals with diabetes are still covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), regardless of age, and a referral is not required. The only proof that you are using medications to control your diabetes.
