Helping women through the menopause transition has been a big part of my practice over the last 10 years or so, and now I’m officially a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) through

The MSCP certification complements my clinical experience and knowledge of naturopathic tools for perimenopause/menopause health by equipping me with the most up to date conventional medical standards and therapies to help women from their 40s and beyond (it’s coming up for us fellow millennials!!)

Here is a post I wrote recently on one of the most common (and undiagnosed) causes of IBS. I know there are tons of people out there who are just living with bloating, constipation/diarrhea, but it doesn't have to be that way!

Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can be challenging, with its myriad of uncomfortable symptoms impacting daily life. In many of my patients, the recommended treatment for their IBS symptoms is limited to over the counter laxatives or anti-diarrheals with the occasion suggestion of a probio...

Virus Support For Parents/Adults

As a parent of a toddler in daycare, I have been exposed to more germs than ever before. Here are some things I have in my house for my husband and I to try to ensure that we can be *a little* protected against what she brings home. I will also say that I am currently pregnant, and that does change what I might suggest to others. That’s why it’s super important to talk to your healthcare provider/ND before wasting money on a bunch of random supplements!

1. Vitamin D: same as what I mentioned in the toddler post regarding importance to immune system function, but also we know that most Canadians are below sufficient levels of vitamin D. Test your levels at least once, it costs about $35-50.
2. Honey based cough syrup: you can totally make your own at home with garlic, onion, and honey. This isn’t just an old wives tale, there is research around high quality honey as an antimicrobial/ anti-jussive! I received this as a sample so that’s why I have it pictured.
3. Zinc: An important mineral for the immune system. Gummies because sometimes I get pill fatigue too. These gummies contain a decent dose per gummy which is why I’ll even entertain this as a product :)
4. Echinacea: great for the immune system, but super important to get a HIGH QUALITY product with active components of the plant. If one product is cheaper than other, look at the dose/ concentration of the active constituent.
5. Not pictured, but Olive Leaf Extract: a great anti-viral for acute illness. It’s also one of the few things that I can safely take in pregnancy. For non pregnant people, I usually suggest Andrographis (an herb).

Again, please consult your ND/healthcare provider (or book with me if you don’t have one) before using anything!

PEDIATRIC ACETOMINOPHEN/IBUPROFEN (commonly known as Tylenol/Advil) shortage.

This is a really important share. Sometimes we need to use medications in our kids and so the medication shortage in Canada is scary. This leaves many parents resorting to cutting adult pills in halves, quarters, etc but if you don’t know what you’re doing, this could potentially be dangerous especially in very young children.

This info sheet was put together by a group of pharmacists. Please read this, or better yet confirm with your healthcare provider/pharmacist before splitting adult dosages. Share to all those who you think need to see this!

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted here but I thought I’d share a couple of useful things in our home toddler virus kit.

1. Vitamin D drops: we all know it’s useful for so many things, including immune system function. We give this on a somewhat regular basis to our daughter because she’s now in daycare
2. Prospan: this is a cough syrup for more mucousy coughs. It includes an herb called English Ivy and I’ve found it to be helpful this fall.
3. Belladonna homeopathic: I keep this around for fevers. Anecdotally I’ve found it useful in my patients. We’ve been lucky at home and haven’t had super high fevers that required medication or medical attention. I also use a lot of “warming socks” treatment at home at first sign of fever.
4. Probiotic: Much of the immune system resides in the gut. We use this a little more regularly as opposed to just for acute viral illness. Different strains are useful for different things, but this one from NFH is a great multi strain product.

What has been useful for you this fall?

Please consult your healthcare provider before using anything!

This week is Naturopathic Medicine Week and so it was fitting that I presented on the importance of nutrition in for the Ontario Chronic Pain network. We had people tune in from all over the province. Lots of great questions came in and I have about 15 more to answer later because we ran out of time. I’m so glad to to see there is growing interest in the field of pain and nutrition. Also grateful to be a part of .pain.and.wellness.centre where our patients get stellar multidisciplinary care ❤️❤️

Let’s start this off by saying that if there was a time to invest in your health and wellbeing, then this would be it. That’s because we’re learning that survival rates are higher in healthier individuals with stronger immune systems. Although we don’t know every detail pertaining to COVID-1...
