Very interesting interview with Philip Shepherd about embodied intelligence and wisdom. And how much living we miss out on when we are in our heads all the time (as many/most of us have been taught to be).

Philip Shepherd is the author of “New Self, New World: Recovering Our Senses in the Twenty-First Century.” He leads workshops internationally on the art of embodiment. In this interview, Philip talks about embodiment, the body’s three brains, and his workshops centered on reconnecting with one...

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, 'What does love mean?' The answers they got were broader, deeper, and more profound than anyone could have ever imagined!

'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore... So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love.' Rebecca - age 8

'When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.' Billy - age 4

'Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.' Karl - age 5

'Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.' Chrissy - age 6

'Love is what makes you smile when you're tired.' Terri - age 4

'Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.' Danny - age 8

'Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and just listen.' Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)

'If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.' Nikka - age 6

(we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)

'Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it every day.' Noelle - age 7

'Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.' Tommy - age 6

'During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.

He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore.' Cindy - age 8

'My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.' Clare - age 6

'Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.' Elaine - age 5

'Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford.' Chris - age 7

'Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.' Mary Ann - age 4

'I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.' Lauren - age 4

'When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.' (what an image!) Karen - age 7

'Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn't think it's gross...' Mark - age 6

'You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.' Jessica - age 8

And the final one: The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, 'Nothing, I just helped him cry.'

I think this may be the great lesson of our times. The more we look outward for solutions, the more disconnected and lost we feel. How do we know what will help us if we don't know ourselves? Looking inward is not always comfortable or easy but it's the only way home. However you do it, wherever you do it, take time to reflect and listen.

This is what it's all about. :) Thanks Kristine Weber!

The benefits of yawning!🙂

Learn how self-induced yawning is one of the best practices to stimulate our parasympathetic nervous system as well as balance our brain. Yawn on!

Love this! Yoga poses are intended to help you connect with your Self. If you are forcing your body into a position that it is not ready for, this creates a disconnect, which is the opposite of the aim of Yoga. Use your yoga practice to make friends with all parts of yourself. It takes time and patience so please be kind with yourself when you notice negative thoughts and emotions arise. Give them space and let them pass.

Child’s pose is one of those poses people either love or hate. Though it can be relaxing, it is often hard to get into depending on one’s knees, hips, lower or upper body type.

It’s so important not to force yourself into an uncomfortable pose as it can lead to discomfort, pain, and or injury, which is not helpful to you and your body.

Yoga aims to help relieve suffering and there are many ways to practice asana that help us relieve suffering. This is my new favourite version of child’s pose. If you don’t have a bolster, you can use a chair, table with a pillow for your head.
Remember Stihra Sukkha Asanam - Stable/steady and Comfort
It’s not about forcing your body into a pose, it’s more about using the pose to get into the body.

Thanks again and for this opportunity to learn about how we can make yoga more accessible for everyone!

Important article. We must stay true to Yoga's history and foundations in order to call what we do Yoga. I don't think that means being perfect, whatever that means, but to honour Yoga's roots and continue to learn and seek a deeper, subtler experience of life. Much of what is called "yoga" in Canada would be more aptly named, Yoga-inspired exercise, IMHO.

In this issue of Amplify, Rishika Jani talks about trying to maintain her traditional yoga practice after moving from India

Really interesting article! New research shows that eccentric exercise (using muscles while they are stretched and elongated, e.g. going down stairs) is much more effective than concentric exercise (contracting muscles, e.g. going up stairs). As it turns out, much of the work we do in yoga asana is eccentric exercise, e.g. going into a lunge or warrior pose, squats, lowering down from a plank or cobra pose.

Running up stairs? Lifting Weights? Dr Michael Mosley explains why the benefits of eccentric exercise mean you should be doing the exact opposite.

More modern scientific evidence to back up yogic wisdom.

Data from neuroscience shows that it is way better to give than to receive — and high performing people agree.
