It’s Therapeutic Recreation Awareness Month, and we’re shining a spotlight on some of the incredible Therapeutic Recreation (TR) professionals who bring meaning, joy and connection to life at Baycrest.

Today we're celebrating Sofya Chepurnova, Recreationist, Apotex, a highlight of her career has been leading the interactive music or INMU project. INMUs are multi-sensory, music-based tools that bring peace, joy and engagement to residents, even outside of regular activity hours.

“Our job is to make people happy… We make sure our residents enjoy their day-to-day life, and most importantly, feel like they are at home.”

From music and meaningful activities to everyday moments of connection, TR professionals help brighten our patient and residents’ days and improve their wellbeing, mood and quality of life.

This Psychology Month, we’re celebrating a psychologist at Baycrest who supports older adults and their families with empathy, expertise and evidence‑based care. For Dr. Dora Ladowski, Clinical Neuropsychologist, Neuropsychology & Cognitive Health at Baycrest, the highlight of their work is hearing directly from older adults about the experiences that shape their lives.

“When older adults bring their perspective and life experiences into discussions about cognitive health, I learn a lot about the things that are important to them. Their willingness to share their experiences and support each other helps build social connections that continue even after programs have ended.”

Through programs like Learning the Ropes and Memory Link, they empower clients with education, strategies and supports to help them protect their brain health and live with confidence.

"I provide education, support and skills-based interventions to empower people with memory challenges to cope in active ways, engage in health-promoting behaviours and maximize their quality of life. At Baycrest, psychologists help to make sense of complex clinical presentations, support clients’ autonomy, deliver thoughtful evidence-based care and conduct research to enhance clinical practice and client outcomes. I'm proud to work in a place where the input of psychologists is valued and in demand!"

🌎 This month and always, we celebrate the psychologists who strengthen wellbeing, support autonomy and help clients and families navigate cognitive health with dignity. Learn more by visiting https://www.baycrest.org/all-clinics-services/neuropsychology-and-cognitive-health/

We’re proud to share that Baycrest’s Dr. Morris Freedman has been appointed to the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest civilian honour.
Dr. Freedman, who currently serves as Head of the Division of Neurology and Senior Scientist at the Rotman Research Institute and as Medical Director of the Pamela and Paul Austin Centre for Neurology and Behavioural Support, is recognized for his leadership in advancing our understanding of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia.
His pioneering work in cognitive assessment, including the development of the Toronto Cognitive Assessment and the Object Alternation Test, along with influential research on clock drawing, has shaped dementia diagnosis and care in Ontario and worldwide. He also co-created Baycrest’s Virtual Behavioural Medicine program, bringing specialized dementia expertise directly into people’s homes and helping reduce avoidable hospitalizations and distressing transitions in care. In addition, he has played a major leadership role in global distance learning through videoconferencing, expanding access to expertise internationally.
Congratulations, Dr. Freedman, on this well-deserved honour.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science was yesterday, however we still have so many people to spotlight and celebrate. “One thing I wish more girls knew about a career in science is that success comes from collaboration and persistence, not from working alone or knowing all the answers.” says Hong He, RAI Coordinator, Apotex Centre, Jewish Home for the Aged.

Even though International Day of Women and Girls in Science was yesterday, we still have so many people to spotlight and celebrate. “One thing I wish more girls knew about a career in science is that women and science grow stronger every time someone like you steps in.” says Bruna Seixas-Lima, MA, PhD, Scientific Associate at the Baycrest Academy for Research and Education.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science was yesterday, however we still have so many people to spotlight and celebrate. “One thing I wish more girls knew about a career in science is that it requires qualities they already possess: curiosity, resilience and imagination. A tenacious search for an answer to a bold question can offer a unique perspective, one that genuinely matters and may shift how we solve problems in the world.” says Regina Jokel, Ph.D., Clinician Associate, Baycrest Academy for Research and Education.
