Did you know that only 31% of working-age Canadians with vision loss are employed full-time, compared to about 65% of Canadians overall?

This White Cane Week (February 1–7), we recognize the white cane as a symbol of independence and empowerment, not charity or pity, and we highlight the ongoing need for more accessible, inclusive workplaces.

White canes support people with sight loss in navigating their surroundings safely and independently. Vision loss exists on a spectrum, and it’s important not to make assumptions about what someone can or cannot see.

When barriers are removed, people who are blind or have low vision can fully contribute their skills and talents at work. Inclusion isn’t just the right thing to do, it strengthens our workforce.

Stigma isn’t just about language or labels. It’s a social process that shapes attitudes, reinforces power imbalances, and justifies unfair treatment—especially for people with disabilities.

In our latest Disability & Work Topics 101 blog, we break down what stigma really means, how it shows up in workplaces, and why understanding it matters for building more inclusive employment practices.

Did you know?

Indigenous Peoples with disabilities in Canada face profound challenges shaped by colonialism, ableism, and systemic inequities. Indigenous populations have some of the highest disability rates of any demographic in the country, yet their experiences remain underrepresented in research, labour market data, disability advocacy spaces, and employment policy design.

These gaps matter, and addressing them is essential to building inclusive, equitable employment systems.

Let’s talk real barriers.🗣️

Many job seekers already bring skills, education, volunteering, and lived experience to the table, but those assets are often overlooked when hiring focuses narrowly on “years of experience.”

When employers recognize transferable skills and create entry points like paid internships, mentorship, and skills-based hiring, talent doesn’t disappear, it grows.

Inclusive hiring starts with opportunity.
