We are proud to partner with Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on their upcoming Cardiovascular Surgery Program, the first of its kind in Northwestern Ontario.

The program, developed with UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, will improve access to surgical care, reduce wait times, and lead to better outcomes for cardiac patients across the region. It will allow patients to receive urgent and elective procedures in Northwestern Ontario, eliminating the need for long-distance travel to southern Ontario for approximately 300 patients every year.

Congratulations to Melanie and the late Peter Munk and the Peter and Melanie Munk Charitable Foundation on being named inaugural recipients of the UHN Mission Legacy Awards!

A new era in cardio and vascular care in Canada began in 1993 with a gift to UHN from Melanie and the late Peter Munk. This gift first established the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at UHN’s Toronto General Hospital. Since then, their total contributions to the UHN Foundation toward cardiovascular care, research and education have surpassed $187 million.

Dr. Heather Ross got a concerning alert one weekend.

Medly, a smartphone-based digital monitoring program, had notified her that one of her patients was experiencing an increased heart rate. After following-up, Dr. Ross was able to make an urgent call to a pharmacy near where the patient was vacationing, enabling her to get back on medication and avoid a potential trip to the hospital.

Advances in wearable technologies are enabling UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre to lead the world when it comes to monitoring patients outside of traditional clinic settings. As Head of Cardiology, Dr. Ross says this type of technology is key in ensuring that everyone, regardless of geography or socioeconomic strata, gets access to the best possible care.

Introducing Medly, a smartphone-based digital monitoring tool that enables cardiac patients to measure and record key metrics including blood pressure, heart rate and symptoms. The technology, developed at UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre alongside eHealth Innovation at UHN, acts as an extension of the clinic and bridges a large gap for patients that must travel for care.

“We are able to reduce hospitalizations, improve heart failure symptoms and improve adherence to medications,” says Dr. Heather Ross, head of cardiology at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. “That type of technology could be scaled relatively inexpensively and have widespread benefit.”

Medly, which has already been used by over 2,000 patients, has expanded to a larger study in six communities in Uganda using three languages.
