Before your next appointment, ask this one question: Are you an OAO member?

OAO members have agreed to uphold a Code of Ethics, meet stringent Standards of Practice, and pursue ongoing continuing education throughout their careers.

In a profession that is not yet regulated in Ontario, membership in a professional association is one of the strongest signals of accountability you can find.

What questions do you have about choosing a qualified osteopathic manual practitioner? Ask us below.

Osteopathic manual practice is regulated in many countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, & France. In Canada, Osteopathy is regulated in New Brunswick only.

The OAO is working to change that — advocating for regulation of manual osteopathy as a separate and distinct healthcare profession in Ontario. Regulation would mean government oversight, standardized training requirements, and formal accountability for all practitioners — providing stronger protection for the public.

Understanding where the profession stands today is the first step in supporting where it is going.

A recent survey shows most practitioners have a positive attitude toward evidence-based practice (EBP), recognizing its power to improve patient care. This shows strong interest in integrating research into practice. Key opportunities include better access to research, more training, and resources tailored to osteopaths' unique needs.

How do we continue advancing excellence in education, regulation and safety, and improving global recognition of - and patient access to - osteopathic care?

Research is critical to achieving our goals!

Over the past two and a half decades, the annual number of osteopathic publications has grown consistently, reaching a significant peak around the COVID period, followed by a slight decline in subsequent years. The stacked bars clearly illustrate the diversity of study designs contributing to this output across the entire period. Data for 2025 covers the first half of the year only.
