As always, the August long weekend comes around and I can't believe another year has passed. It's always going to be a marker of the best AND the worst things that happened to me over the last few years.

Aug 2017 long weekend started with my IUI and ended with an ER visit that led to a rollercoaster 2 months that included:
❗ 3 visits to the ER
❗ 2 hospital admissions for a total of 2 weeks in a hospital bed
❗ tons of lab tests, x-rays, ultrasounds plus 2 CT scans
❗ too many medications to count
❗ 1 NG tube - the WORST thing ever 😫
❗ Finally a diagnosis of a pelvic inflammatory disease from the IUI with a large pelvic abscess that gave me a full bowel obstruction 😳
❗ A drain installed into my pelvis for 6 weeks to clear up the infection

I then had my IVF retrieval, followed by a laparoscopic surgery for the removal of the scar tissue plus my fallopian tubes due to the damage from the PID & abscess.

Aug 2018 long weekend was the date of my FET that resulted in my little A and I can't even start to tell you how grateful I am that he chose me to be his mama 💙

My next FET was supposed to result in an Aug long weekend baby but unfortunately, it ended in a loss instead.

And my final FET was serendipitously on the Aug long weekend as well, but it wasn't meant to be and it marked the end of my own fertility journey.

So suffice to say, the August long weekend is always wrapped up in lots of grief, but also lots of joy as well.

We spent Aug 2025 long weekend out and about, enjoying the parks and various outdoor activities available in and around the GTA.

What did you do this long weekend? 👇

Today is International Women's Day

On this day, I celebrate:
💗 My mum: She exemplified day after day what unwavering maternal love while excelling at her career looked like. Today, she's revelling in being a 婆婆 (grandma) to my A and living retired life to the fullest. These are solid goals for me to achieve moving forward.
💗 My 婆婆 (grandma): She was my rock and solidly championed for me to push myself beyond my comfort zone while guiding me through all of the challenges of childhood, tween-teenage angst and young adulthood. I miss her every day and hope that she's watching me with love and pride.
💗 My two BFFs: You have been there through thick and thin. You are my sounding board, my voice of reason, my devil's advocate and my chosen sisters. I don't know what I'd do without you both and I can't wait for our Golden Girls season!
💗 My colleagues at .wellness: You are are superstars in your own right and I'm always blown away at what amazing humans and clinicians you are. I'm so grateful to be able to work beside you.
💗 My phenomenal patients: I'm always in awe of the depth of your courage and tenacity in the face of your fertility and/or other health challenges. I'm forever grateful for you choosing to work with me to support and guide you through your health journey. Always know that I'm cheering you along and celebrating with you through all of the ups, but also sending you love, comfort and support through all of the downs.

The first International Women's Day was held in 1911 and the goals of are to:

Breaking the Glass Ceiling in Medical Research

This topic has come up a few times over the last couple of weeks during my conversations with patients, so I wanted to share some interesting tidbits about this with you.

Did you know that women were largely excluded from clinical trials until the late 1980s? 🤯

Here's a quick timeline of progress:
🔬1977: FDA (Food & Drug Administration) encouraged excluding women of "childbearing potential" from early drug trials
🔬1986: NIH (National Institutes of Health) encouraged including women in studies
🔬1993: Inclusion policy becomes law
🔬1993: FDA reverses its previous recommendation of excluding women in early drug trials

And there's definitely MORE work to do!

Despite these changes, women are still underrepresented:
‼️ Only 38.2% of cardiovascular trial participants between 2010 to 2017 were women
‼️ Only 26% were women from 61 to 65 years old

This gap affects the quality of evidence for women's health issues.

Now that you're aware of this, what are your thoughts on improving representation in clinical trials? Share below! 👇

"Do I need to take your vitamin D3 with vitamin K2?"

This question has come up A LOT over the last few weeks and I wanted to address this because there's apparently a lot of info online via marketing of supplement companies and various social media influencers talking about how this is a MUST.

The research on vitamin K taken in combination with vitamin D isn't clear. There is a bit of information that suggests that vitamin K does play a role in bone health BUT there is (currently) limited evidence to support its widespread supplementation.

There is one study that showed a reduction in vertebral fracture risk with vitamin K supplementation but no changes to bone mineral density was observed. Due to this limited evidence, vitamin K isn't currently a routine recommendation for bone health.

More research is needed to better understand the potential benefits of vitamin D + vitamin K for bone health. In the meantime, I don't typically recommend this combination for all of my patients who I recommend vitamin D for and will keep you posted once newer research arises.

🔍 Debunking Fertility Myths: What You Don't Know Can Surprise You!

Did you know that less than 10% of people can accurately describe how fertility changes with age? 🤯

Let's bust some common misconceptions:

1️⃣ Myth: Women can pinpoint when they ovulate.
Fact: Only 13% can predict it accurately, and just 55% can identify their 6-day fertile window.

2️⃣ Myth: Fertility awareness methods don't help.
Fact: Studies show they can boost pregnancy and live birth rates.

3️⃣ Myth: Everyone understands fertility preservation.
Fact: Knowledge gaps persist, especially regarding age-related vs medical options.

The takeaway? Continuous fertility education is crucial. Let's start the conversation and spread awareness. 💡

This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week (Feb 1-7 2025).

Eating disorders affect people of all ages, genders, socioeconomic classes, racial backgrounds, ethnicities and abilities.

In Canada, it's estimated that more than 1.7 million suffer from an eating disorder at any given time. Many of these people are typically teenagers and young adults, with the most first-time cases happening before the age of 25.

A history of an eating disorder or disordered eating is an important conversation to have with your healthcare team when it comes to discussing your fertility because it can:
❗ Mess with your menstrual cycle and cause irregular or skipped cycles
❗ Throw your hormones off kilter but they're crucial for your fertility
❗ Increases risks during pregnancy

AND a history of eating disorder can also negative impact male fertility!

Mental health plays a role as well, so it's very important to address and treat the anxiety and/or depression as well.

Please reach out if you'd like to discuss how naturopathic medicine can support you through your fertility journey.

This is my FAVOURITE Christmas gift EVER.

A had an idea for my gift that he came up with all by himself. He then got Jeff to drive him to the store and he spent a lot of time choosing this specific Barbie for me (after perusing the toy section for himself as well, of course!)

The reasoning behind it?

I had a Barbie when I was a little girl and he wanted to get me a new one so that it would make me happy.

AND he chose this specific one (Cinderella) bc she’s in a cyan dress and that’s my favourite colour.

I don’t think anyone will ever be able to top this gift for me for the rest of my life!

My sweet and thoughtful boy 💙
