🤔 Do the classic clinical shoulder tests actually tell you what specific structure hurts?

Probably not. They aren't that specific.

They can, however, tell you what positions may be bothersome for someone.

These tests aren’t completely useless! In fact, Adam and I both do them sometimes.

However, we INTERPRET them differently!

Here, Adam Meakins discusses some treatments for frozen shoulder that aren't evidence-based.

Because Adam points these types of things out, he's often criticized - "he just says nothing works and he doesn't actually help anyone".

This is not true!

Targeting this criticism was the goal of the newest Forward Physio episode.

Adam breaks down 3 different case studies so you can gain insight into his clinical reasoning and see how he actually helps his patients.

🤔 Do You Need A Diagnosis?

Sometimes, but most of the time, probably not.

This post is probably too in-depth for social media, but hope it helps at least someone!

What's the most important trait you could instil in a new physiotherapist?

For Q, it's about critical thinking.

Having biases is normal, but we have to do our best to regularly challenge our beliefs and strive to continuously improve how we think.

This was inspired by a recent paper: Neuroimmune interactions in musculoskeletal conditions.

It's complex stuff and it makes it seem so silly when we come up with overly simplified explanations for pain.

Stay curious, keep learning.

Feeling like you know everything means you clearly don't know enough.

And stop blaming someone's glutes for every painful condition.

The Dallas Bed Rest Study:

Just one great reason why we shouldn't rest injuries away.

With many injuries, we can regress exercises enough so that the physical stress doesn't impair healing.

Oftentimes, we can also get people exercising other body parts or working on cardio in ways that work around the injury.

In this episode of the podcast, Q Willey outlines how to progress from the easiest change of direction drills to the most advanced ones using a simple framework.

I called this newest episode with Q Willey "The Change of Direction Principles You'll Use Forever".

And I mean it.

Q has created a framework for progressing and regressing change of direction exercises that you'll come back to again and again for all your athletes.

It just makes so much sense.

Whether you are a physio helping someone return to sport or a coach helping athletes perform better, you're going to get a lot of value from this one.

Not all bone stress injuries are the same.

High-risk BSIs have a higher risk of delayed union, non-union, complete fracture, re-fracture, or failure to timely return to sports, while low-risk BSIs typically heal with less complications.

If you want a deeper dive on bone stress injuries and stress fractures, check out the newest Forward Physio episode with Steph Mundt!

Sometimes, us physios get too shortsighted.

We zoom in on a painful body part but forget about the health of the person we’re working with.

In the newest Forward Physio, .dpt breaks down (no pun intended) bone stress injuries - a condition where we cannot forget the persons health and lifestyle factors.

Learn risk factors, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and more! (Link in bio)

Steph is BRILLIANT so don’t miss this one!

Take this advice with a grain of salt if you have a history of back pain or a current injury.

This advice can still apply to people with back pain (I gave this advice to someone today) but sometimes people aren’t ready to explore new forms.

And if you’re unsure, see a qualified rehab professional!

The spine can flex when you lift.

Also, the lumbar flexes when you are trying to keep it straight during a deadlift or squat. You may not be able to see it, but it does indeed go into flexion, even when it looks straight.

So never flex by never picking anything up or respect the nuance 🫡
