Hot Take:
After trying every unhinged thing you can to get labour started, and none of it working, try doing nothing.
Try:
- Rest
- Going for a massage
- Watch a funny movie and eat popcorn
- Take naps
- Go for lunch with your friends and enjoy this prebaby time.

The more you stress about labour starting, the more stress hormones you release, the less likely it is that labour will start.

Stress hormones block the flood of oxytocin you need to get labour going.

However, Endorphins can block those stress hormones and allow oxytocin to slow.

So try all the weird things but also just try to have some good old fashioned fun, relaxation, chilling and laughter.

As a mum of three, when a new baby was added to the family, in order to make my toddler/toddlers not feel replaced by the new baby, if both needed me and neither was in danger or ill, going to the toddler first after I had placed baby somewhere safe (crib, bassinet…) went a long way to making my toddler feel loved and included, and not replaced.

As a doula I learned so many techniques to manage labour with my clients. I bought all the tools and I have a huge backpack to carry them all. But after almost 20yrs in the business I have learned that my most powerful tool is my voice and my listening skills.

For support people sometimes just asking if there is anything they need or what you can do to help. Or even if anything is worrying them can be all that’s needed. Allowing the birthing parent the safe space to verbally vomit out all that is in their head can release anxiety, allow the oxytocin to flow and open up a stalled labour. Allow for the tears, the frustration and swearing if needed.
Often we won’t need to solve anything or do anything, just be open to receive the information and offer a hand, shoulder or an “I understand, I’m here for you.” “I got you”

Do not get discouraged if you are not dilated before you go into labour.

Cervical exams before going into labour can’t tell you anything except for what your cervix is doing at that very moment in time.
It can’t tell you what it’s going to do, even 5 mins from that point.

So take that information with a grain of salt and know that whatever your cervical exam tells you is normal. Completely, absolutely, 100% normal.

During labour all of the birthing parents senses become heightened. So changing colognes or deodorants or wearing any strong scents can be overwhelming and irritating.

I actually had a client send her partner home to shower and change his clothes because the smell was too much for her to manage. Extreme? Sure but she was birthing a baby, she needed him to not smell like he did.

Toronto is under a heat dome for the next few days. Please stay well hydrated, and keep an eye out for signs of dehydration.

If you are concerned or worried about baby at any time, contact your hospital L&D and go get checked out or chat with your midwife.

Dehydration can lead to lowered amniotic fluid, preterm labour, fetal growth issues.
